You have a time machine and you can go back to the 50s/60s and save one Engine. Which would it be ?

So an engine in the mid 1960s cost around 3500 quid (I understand that's what 34023 and 92203 cost in 1967) and a withdrawn coach around 300... so you could by say 10 to 12 coaches instead... well if that was the case then first a 2 car LSWR gate set, a six coach skirted Bournemouth Bulleid set, a Bulleid Tavern car and 2 or three LSWR Ironclad coaches if I had any cash left over:)

...or if I must buy an engine then a LSWR 700 class:

The Beyer-Peacock built M&SWJR 2-6-0 as rebuilt by Swindon - it would have made a most useful preservation era loco I think.

A side window cab K2 would look nice on the Jacobite but the LNWR is under represented in preservation so a Webb Cauliflower, a simple machine ideal for a heritage line.

All good choices. If we're allowed more than one, next on my list would be 3406 Calcutta, the last surviving Bulldog.

If I had a time machine, could I not go back to the 1920s or 1930s at least? When they had proper locos in proper liveries (i.e. red!).

I thought about the Atlantics but dismissed them as a replica / new build will emerge from Sheffield Park

Not particularly important or valuable compared to some of the others, but would have to be 30931 for me, on the same logic.
