The Theme for the Spring gala has been announced as the Glory days of British steam.
Apparantly an A4, Royal Scot, King or Castle and Braunton are likely participents.
    Roll on Spring!

    So presumably 60019, 6100, 5029/6024 and obv 34046.

Not bad actually, some Scot haulage will definately be required from this event. Will be there one of the weekends though not sure which yet.

Either 46115 or 6100 attending would make the gala amazing!!!

Can't see 46115 coming down from Carnforth tbh...

Just realised that 6695 will also still be there. So include the residents 88 / 3850 / 5553 / 4160 / 9351 to the 4 guests gives a total of 10 locos. Certainly a promising event.

That sounds really great - WSR always manage to exceed their past excellent achievements with galas.

An A4 charging up through Stogumber must top it all, though. Better check on the ole grape vine which way she's facing before I get the camera out, though!

Isnt' the format rather similar to the SVR Spring event ? and in these credit crunch times is pushing the boat out so far such a good idea ?

Not in my mind. 6100 is a 'new' loco fresh from overhaul, will be the first time I have seen 6100 working and I'm sure I wont be alone in this.

I see no mention of a Bulleid in the SVR line-up either, and OK they may have an A4 there but this will be the first ever visit of an A4 to the WSR so it is something different from this perspective.

I agree and for those of us who live in the South West it means that we don't have a long trek to see an A4! \:D/ =D>

So how about a railtour or two to bring the visitors in, and/or send them home afterwards?
5029: outward from Brum via Malvern and Llanvihangle, return via Bromsgrove?
60019: outward from Waterloo or perhaps Eastleigh, via Templecombe, return via Bristol and Warminster.
6100: from Paddington via Newbury and back the same way.
Maybe one or two of them could stay at the WSR for an extra week or three, to work tours to Plymouth or Par, or perhaps to South Wales?

I'll bet Past Time Rail, Vintage Trains and Steam Dreams are working on such ideas even now...

Re: WSR Spring Steam Gala 2009

Not sure if it is news to everyone else but I've just seen on www.wsr.org.uk that Tornado is attending the first weekend of the gala! It also says Royal Scot and my new favourite 6695 will be in attendance. What a mouth watering prospect - think I might have to make another trip down to Somerset in March.

Well UK Railtours are running a charter from Cambridge to Minehead on Saturday 28 March to bring in visitors albeit Class 67 hauled.

Fitting charters in on gala days often causes problems on the line with timekeeping and of course it's one less path for a return gala steam service.

The addition of 60163 Tornado to the lineup for 21 & 22 March will really add that 'wow' factor to their already impressive lineup.

it says more than tornado and royal scot, it also says king edward and bittern also that they are in talks with 2 or 3 other locomotive owners.

Definitely looking good. It had better be as I've already booked the B&B!

    Cheers,

    So the line up:

    Visiting
    60163 Tornado (First Weekend ONLY)
    60019 Bittern
    6100 Royal Scot
    6024 King Edward I
    + others

    Home
    34046 Braunton
    88
    6695
    3850
    5553
    9351

What about 4160? She not going to be working? Wonder what else they are going to add for what is already a fantastic line-up.

Well, I think I'll definitely attend now. 46100 was tempting enough, and a ride behind 60019 after attending the SVR gala (which may have 60007) will mean I'll have ridden behind all three A4s in one year. But with the possibility of 60163 on the weekend that I planned to go... wild horses couldn't drag me away!

Another fan of the GW 0-6-2Ts...with Castles one of the few Western engines I really appreciate. Need to see 6695 at the WSR before too long.

A fantastic line up - sure to pull the crowds. Is there going to be any maroon coaches this year??

If you want to see 6695 at WSR you only have until the end of March to do so, as she will be returning to Swanage April/May 2009 (possibly stopping off en-route.....watch this space).
