WSR S&D Spring Steam Gala, 5-6 and 10-13 March 2016

Discussion in 'Galas and Events' started by gwr4090, Nov 14, 2015.

Colin Howard, WSR's Head of Commercial Services, writes:

"Please can we stress that the overflow car parking at Bishops Lydeard will NOT be available over this weekend of the gala. Can we ask visitors to consider using the free Crosville shuttle bus from Taunton Station and other public transport or car sharing. Paid parking is available adjacent to Watchet Station, Minehead Station and on the road parking near Blue Anchor Station. Please be patient with our staff and parking marshalls, who will do their best to assist you."

When working the 1545 from Minehead, on arrival at Blue Anchor the driver declared that he did not have enough water to continue to Bishops Lydeard and had to return to Minehead.

This was achieved by leaving the stock of the 1545 at Blue Anchor and attaching 34098 to the rear of the 1450 from Bishops Lydeard.

34070 was then sent out from Minehead to Blue Anchor to take the train forward.

The above events resulted in trains running up to an hour and 20 minutes late. The WSR hopes that visitors to the Gala were not too disappointed by the delays and made their onward connections.

The next two days of the Gala will run as scheduled.

Statement from Robin White, WSR Line Controller, authorised by Paul Conibeare, WSR General Manager.

How can a loco that has only just left Minehead be running short of water by Blue Anchor? Surely they fill them right up before starting out?

Am I right in thinking there is no water facility between MD and BL? I think I've seen pictures from the early preservation days showing a water tower at Williton but maybe I'm imagining it!

Shame about the issue with 34053 and the time lost afterwards, Manston being over an hour late when it finally passed, had to give up on last two shots cause it would have been dark, would say more but dont fancy getting lynched for having a diffing opinion tonight heres my effort from today, be back sunday for a bit more. I was at Crowcombe when news filtered through regarding the delay of the 15:45 service from Minehead.

Within minutes a member of the station staff walked along the platform and explained to everyone what had happened to the train, how long the delay would be and apologised.

Well done to the WSR. This is the best way to deal with the public when a problem arises. It's also the way that customers like to be treated. <BJ>

We had some high quality staff on today.

It is invidious to single out individuals but the signalman at Blue Anchor (a relatively newly qualified man) handled a complex situation methodically, safely and efficiently. The signalman who was at Williton is a retired supervisor from Bristol Panel who handled information flow to the southern end of the line.

    Great chaps to work with.

Lets face it though could have halved the delay to services if there was a crew at Wiliton sat on 47840 , Ready to act as thunderbird in the event of a failure such as yesterday,
    But what do I know....

20-20 hindsight is always a wonderful thing. Who is to say the failure would not have been at Minehead or Bishops Lydeard?

Are you by any chance Paul Brittain?
