West Somerset Railway General Discussion

Discussion in 'Heritage Railways & Centres in the UK' started by gwr4090, Nov 15, 2007.

Late Summer Weekend 1-2 Sep 2018

As the main summer holiday season comes to an end why not join us for a couple of days when we run an enhanced timetable of steam and vintage diesel trains over our 20 miles of line.

Normal fares will apply including those for holders of Local Residents Travel Cards and the newly introduced for 2018 Annual Pass.

So apart from the railway interest, there is a great chance to use our trains to visit the seaside, medieval Dunster with its castle, the old harbour town of Watchet or to call in at Stogumber for the famous refreshments and station garden.

On Saturday 1st there will be a British Railways Western Region theme to the day to recapture the days when steam was giving way to the first generation of diesel locos. Trains will be headed by 6960 “Raveningham Hall”, 7820 “Dinmore Manor”, 7822 “Foxcote Manor”, D7017 and D9526. Sunday 1st will be more of a mixed bag but diesel workings will include the popular pairing of D6566 and D6575.

There will be a licensed buffet car on most trains and the railway museums at Bishops Lydeard, Washford and Blue Anchor will be open. The Club Room of the Taunton Model Railway Group at Bishops Lydeard will be open to visitors and the model railway in the Gauge Museum should also be in action.

This weekend does not count as a Gala, so normal ticket arrangements apply.

Does the “Popular pairing up the class 33s” mean double headed service trains?

Is that the same for the 1940s weekend?

Just to clarify, the two 33s do not double-head with each other on Sunday although D6566 is booked to be paired with 53808 on the 10:00 ex MD to NF as far as BL.
    Otherwise they work singly.
All subject to availability of course!

I think the statement should more correctly read re-railing. I don't think a single panel of track was relayed prior to the FS visit. What was replaced were overly worn rails AFAIK.
I know P-Way worked hard to locate all the rails that needed to be replaced. I am also fairly certain the driver for the urgent replacement programme was the FS visit. But I'm just a humble Fireman so I might have got that wrong.

That's an intriguing statement. I would have expected the PW department to know the condition of all the track. That's what inspections and records are for. They shouldn't have to go out and specifically look for rails that need replacing.

Not well. Had a habit of running hot boxes, IIRC.

Good to see the GB rail tour visiting minehead next year

  16. Clearly unsuitable but that's all we had. And we think today's timings are slow. The 07 crawled along :(

  18. The train has just passed under Lydeard Bridge and is approaching Crowcombe on its (slow) journey to Minehead.
