Further to My post in the Tornado thread, I decide to put a bit down here.
Possibly twenty years ago I was speaking to an AIBI inspector, Who had inspected My boilers in the past and We got onto the above subject. At the time He was inspecting a Tkh boiler (Polish built USA tank) which has these stays. It seems that the appropriate (European?) standard for the installation of these stays was very 'Basic' and from what He was saying it would seem that if a broken stay should be found during 'Servicing' (they have a longitudinal 'Tell tale' hole drilled part way along them) then the stay and weld would be ground off in the firebox and the 'Egg Cup' ground off outside then a new egg cup and stay would be simply seal welded in place and the cap seal welded on, the whole lot not requiring anything more than a visual inspection whilst in steam.
