Went and had a look at the Doncaster Museum/Library complex yesterday. Certainly an impressive building and some interesting items displayed in there, not just in the rail transport hall, though the Suffolk registered Ford Popular looked a bit out of place parked behind the V2's tender!.

I've just realised I took photos of both of those locos in Doncaster before - Doncaster Works Open Day at the end of July 1984!

Any clues what the cast red notice fitted centrally above the bufferbeam on 4771 said on the 1984 photo. Was it a Shildon 150/Rocket 150 attendance plaque?

If you mean the 'O' that is at the top left of the buffer beam that was explained in 60800 Curator with a Camera as being from the previous abestos management system.

It’s undercover and on display in its home town.

    What’s not to like?!

It could be so much worse than being on display as one of the two main attractions in its place of building.

Yes, I’d like to see it in steam too but there’s nothing wrong with where it is and how its displayed.

There's not enough overhaul capacity to keep every loco in the country in operation, and probably not enough suitable work for them all even if they did all run. Given that, displayed in presentable condition in one piece undercover is a lot better than the fate of many other "preserved" locomotives.

I do perfect;y well, why trot out a hackneyed oversued phrase and not simply enjoy the fact the loco still exists and coudl run again one day?
