The start from Stratford is tricky in a similar respect (gradient and curve) so i don't see the difference ?, plenty of other tricky starts where that could of happened rather than Durham.

I feel that it is an extremely bad idea to run the trip to newcastle,I would not like to spend any time in the city on a derby day.I think i'm right in saying that if their are less than 79 arrests it's considered to be a well policed event.

Look on the bright side. Maybe Tornado will distract the two tribes and get them thinking about something else!

I've just looked at Rules of the Route (Engineering Works Plan) Section 7 and I can't see any possessions between York and Newcastle for that weekend which will affect the 60163 tours.

    Regards, Neil

Re: Tornado Covenantor Trip 1st Feb 2009

For any covenantors reading this thread who are worried about coming into Newcastle with Tornado at the same time as two sets of football fans, the Premier League website has the Newcastle-Sunderland game taking place on Monday 2nd February at 7.00pm. Double-checking the Newcastle FC website gives the same information.

So unless someone knows something the Premier League and Newcastle don't, I hope this clears up any concerns!

Re: Tornado Covenantor Trip 1st Feb 2009

I've just been given some times which, if correct, suggest a 65mph average between York and Newcastle and a minute quicker than 60009's 'record' in the marginally easier Newcastle - York direction.

If this is possible depends on whether 60163 suffers the restriction over the viaduct approaching Durham that has applied to 60007/9/19 on recent tours.

    Mouth-watering in anticipation.

Re: Tornado Covenantor Trip 1st Feb 2009

The match is now scheduled for Sunday 1st Feb with a 1:30pm kick off (it is live on Sky), altough the Newcastle Utd website is showing Monday 2 Feb at 7pm - never seen a match kick off at this time before so I am presuming the 1st Feb to be correct.

Thanks for this Adrian - I'm not a football fan so have to rely on information given by those in the know! You'd have thought the Premier League website would be accurate but obviously Sky rules the roost as it pays the bills!

If kick off is indeed going to be 1.30pm we should still be OK for our arrival which is scheduled for 2.17pm.

If anyone in the Newcastle area can confirm kick off time, I would be most grateful.

    Hi Alexa,

Have just checked again, and it is definately a 13.30 kick off on the Sunday.

    http://www.nufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Fi ... 78,00.html

It is also on the premier league website at 13.30 kick off on the sunday as well.

    http://www.premierleague.com/page/FixturesResults

Try Sunday 1st February 13.30 kick off.

    http://www.nufc.com/2008-09html/fixtures.html

Sky sports advertise it as a live match on TV also.

    http://www.skysports.com/calendar/footb ... ay,00.html

These all cannot be wrong surely?????

Re: Tornado Covenantor Trip 1st Feb 2009

Im thinking about this reply, and although Tornado will miss the kick off time it will not miss the in match and after match disturbances. Im not being a killjoy, but take it from me Newcastle is never a "nice" place to be on derby day, even if the match ends in a draw.

Pitching 500 steam fans, most of whom will be the wrong side of 40, onto the streets of Newcastle, to fend for themselves for 3-4 hours is exposing them to danger in my opinion.

When they get there, what are they going to do :-

    1. Go to the Pub - They will be full of supporters, and invariably trouble breaks out.
    2. Go for something to Eat - Sunday - most places shut on Derby Day.
    3. Go Shopping - shops shut at 4.00pm, if they even open on the day.

All of the hard work that has taken place to build and certify Tornado, in a fantastically professional manner, could be spoilt for the wrong reasons. Headline writers would have a field day if "normals" got mixed up after match problems. It would detract from what is a fantastic piece of british enginnering, on its maiden passenger outings.

Again, let me reiterate i dont want to be a spoil sport of killjoy, im a covenantor myself, together with my brother and father, we all feel the same.

Looking in the thread for The Peppercorn Pioneer the timings for Tornado to arrive in Newcastle is 14:17 and leaves at 16:56 while the football is going to kick off at 13:30 (Before arrival at Newcastle) half time at 14:15 (About Tornado's arrival time) and end about 15:15. So Newcastle and Sunderland fans should be almost well gone by the time Tornado leaves.

In an ideal world that would happen, let me assure you on this day in Newcastle every rule gets thrown out of the book.

I assume the boys in blue have been informed of the tours arrival, and are happy???

And after ejecting the passengers in Newcastle, what are they going to do????
