With 5029 doubleheading a 47 I would have thought that would be quite photographable. To me much better than the box hanging on the back.

Even better would be 5029 doubleheading a Washup. Now that's something for a 100% SR steam only Yeti to say!

Another lineside fire reported near Kemble. It really is extremely dry out there. BJ>

Trains to divert via the Berks & Hants where possible. The fire has damaged 90 meters of 650 volt signalling cable. Limited replacement road transport has started''.

You know me,I would normally go out for a diesel but I do video not photos and would like to get 5029 working as it should.47812 will be pushing most of the way with Nunney just making smoke,I would think anyway. Steam cant afford to have any fires, so I cant see the crew on the Castle putting anything more than token power on. Plenty of smoke for the pictures but not the castle bark I want to get on film.
With only 2 Warships preserved I dont see one of them being made main line ready... pity as it would be fantastic. But then if there was one mainline I would be on the train not lineside....

Actually, by the sounds Nunney was doing a decent amount of chuffing as we were able hear it at home (circa a mile from the Kidderminster stations). I wished I'd spotted that it was heading down south as I would have gone to watch it, oh well...
Well the Warships are at a disadvantage to the Westerns there as they weren't airbraked and for a diesel loco this would probably be very useful. I don't know about the other Warship, but I think the DTG are busy enough with D1015 to do anything more with D821, shame really but nevermind.

I assume the 47 will come off at Paignton, so at least Nunney can stretch her legs over the properly trimmed permanent way of the PDSR? It could follow on and be used for shunt release at Kingswear. Save getting the 25 out....

If the 47 is tucked inside I doubt if they will take it off in Paignton mainline platform Stu,it is a "Summer" saturday after all ( I know its not as busy at it used to be but you know what I mean....)
Then could take it off in Goodrington Station loop but again is it worth doing it??

'Nunney Castle' + 47 + 11 chocolate and cream coaches depart Bristol TM on time at 09:15. No diesel assistance pulling away from the station.
Loco looking and sounding superb. Excellent paint job. <BJ>

I think ear plugs should be handed out on goodrington beach when she starts climbing with that load.

Great to see this get under way and a fitting reward for all the work done on 5029. So Nunney has the equivalent of 15 behind the tender if the Class 47 does nothing and still a pretty substantial load if it just carries its weight. Sorry to say that I can't see that situation lasting for long even without the weather conditions. That said, if the crews play it carefully, as they must, I'm sure that it could be a great day out for the paying passengers.

The 47 was certainly working when the train passed me at Malago Vale with the ground being so dry the only place where the castle may stretch its legs will be the sea wall

My geography is pretty good so I'm confident Torbay comes under the 'western' area and along with the 'south west' has had a steam ban slapped on it. How come various trips last week were treated differently?

Since that time discussions have taken place between the various parties and have proved successful leading to a compromise of using a steam loco
with a diesel tucked in behind the tender. A far better result, in my opinion, than last week's train being hauled throughout by a diesel. <BJ>

Not so much an issue away from NR, plus the Manor has no choice but to be worked on heavier trains.

Rest assured that the DBS driver and locomotive inspector will have been given strict instructions not to exert Nunney Castle and risk causing a fire and on that basis, the diesel will be doing the "serious" work up hills and away from stations or signal checks.

When Nunney left Paignton this evening it seemed to be doing all the work
with the 47 ticking over !
Nunney Castle sounded like a GWR Castle should sound.
Remind me when I was a boy in the late 50's / early 60's !

Here is 5029 Nunney Castle at Goodrington on a LE movement to Paignton after the first leg. It seems it only used a small amount of coal on the trip, being very careful to avoid fires it seems.

My video from yesterday's run, seen at Dawlish, Paignton for servicing, Newton Abbot and Yatton. Even though she did have diesel assistance it was still lovely to see Nunney again :)
