RTT gives it as 31 late off Crewe, 31 late leaving Chester, 55 late at Saltney Jct. and so on. I wonder if it's lost its path and is now following a stopper.

I understand from someone who was at Shrewsbury station that the platform staff reported it was due to a broken air line on a diesel in the Chester area...

85L and Hereford but only 24L at Abergavenny. That's some recovery, especially as RTT has it leaving Abergavenny 5 minutes before it departed Hereford. :)

At about 1:16 in that video there's a brief burst of steam apparently coming out of both sides of the leading loco just above the piston valves. Where might that be coming from, and why?

There were a few reasons for the late running. There was a problem on the preceding train from Shrewsbury in the morning that only led to a 6 mins loss. Trouble was the lack of a high power pump on the water tanker at Chirk - not BTT unit. Left 22 down but recovered to only 12 down at Crewe. Engines came off, turned and got to Heritage Centre quickly but servicing the two locos overran and as luck would have it, although we were ready to leave at 1610, 16 down but the Chester - Crewe service which got in the way of release from the Heritage Centre was let out on time at 1623. We duly left 31 down and things got worse just outside at Chester. We were held for 21 minutes for the Holyhead-Birmingham International Service to pass. Chirk is a poor choice of water stop because of the single track section and this sort of thing is inevitable when you lose your path. We got lucky at Shrewsbury as the Holyhead-Cardiff was 12 down and they let us run to Hereford. We got back to BTM 61 down due to sensible driving which negated the need for water at Magor.
