Lucky that the train wasn't well loaded and it was possible to get folk away on a service train. It seems that the diesel rescue arrived at Llandudno Junction at 2150 so hopefully the crew, loco and stock will get back home not too long into Wednesday. Either way, it must be really disappointing for the crew but I suspect that if it is the fire that is clinkered up then there is little that can practically be done on the road.

The crew spent well over an hour working on the fire at LJ and only when we left on the 7.50 Manchester service had they started to put coal on. The diesel was waiting at Chester at 8.45 for Ray as the driver who had brought it down does not sign the Welsh coast route.

Unfortunately I have just heard that the passengers woes were compounded at Warrington. The Arriva service was due to arrive at 21.19 and the Virgin service to Preston was due to depart at 21.17, with the next northbound being 22.17, Now I understand that approaches were made to Virgin to ask them to hold the train for that couple of minutes. The passengers however were just in time to see the Pendolino departing.

There may have been a operational reason etc for not waiting, Virgin are normally very helpful for delays from other TOCs for passengers with ticket links to use a certain Virgin Service, but won't generally hold fast trains say to Scotland or returning to Euston due to spacing/timing/slots of their timetables. This Virgin Service isn't shown as a connecting service. It is a fairly frequent service now at most times of day.
An hours wait for a scheduled service isn't to long to wait for another train IMO, the earlier delays and Passengers woes are hardly anything to do with Virgin Trains or Arriva come to that.

An hours wait after a full day out is a lot particularly when the next train is 22.17 and it means missing the last onward connection which some did.

I appreciate what you are saying, and the TOC is generally responsible for getting you to your destination on ticket purchased,
But in this instant onward travel should have been arranged by Steam company running trip, to supply taxi or buses as required if there journey is disrupted. Hardly anything to do with Virgin Trains as above.

Even on NYMR if our passengers can't get back to their ticketed destination due to breakdown/event, with no further trains running, we supply Taxis/coach to destination of ticket.

I am not sure if this was offered by the Company involved on this trip, but if it had been organised to use a certain timed Virgin train, we do wait or as authorised by duty manager, so not sure what happened in this reported event.
In fairness, the delay wasn't down to Virgin, and not sure what/if arrangements were made/confirmed.

It's just that last year when an analogous thing happened, Virgin did hold a train for 5 minutes to pick up passengers who would have been similarly stranded.

And remember various tour companies have in the past provided alternative transport when all else has failed.

I have been informed today that the station staff at Warrington knew nothing about the request to hold the Pendo and would have done for the few minutes required. Seems communication was the problem.

Someone want to tell RYTC? Tickets clearly state the Gresley machine.

Maybe after 61994's last attempt it was decided that a trusty Stanier is what's needed....;)
