Steam came on at Preston last time and there seems to be a path from Carnforth in the morning to indicate this. So it's either 45690 or 35018 !

Steam is on at Preston, 26 minutes to change locos, but no news yet as to what it will be. I will get the drone to do a pass on Tuesday morning to see what's lit up.....

There's a cabin pod suspended below, the photo doesn't show the size of the drone, it's about 30 feet diameter. .

Those wheels will be twirling around; Warrington BQ (start) to Crewe (stop) in 30 min (av. 48 mph) for a free-running loco "limited" to 50 mph max. On at Preston coach H/29f - see you on Wednesday.

Looking forward to the Taming of the Shrew.

'Limited'--- is it like road speed limits eg 50 plus 10%?

I don't know what the prescribed limits are, there are a couple of mainline drivers who are members of this forum they may be able to help. I suspect that it is less than 10%. I am comfortable reporting speeds that are up to 3 mph above loco or line limit but refrain from being specific if there were to be any speeds above this.

I don't think there is any leeway, as such, or at least not beyond occasional overspeed by a few mph when the ruling gradient allows locos to run on a bit faster. But if the loco limit is 75 and you decide to run for mile after mile at 80 then I suspect that would be frowned on. We all recall what happened a while back on an early test run with Tornado when someone decided to look at the log in the cab of the attached diesel.

At work, when we set up speedos, they should read within 2mph of the actual speed.
