I would be interested to know what speed and time you would expect a 5XP/6P to attain unaided over the S&C with a load (without the diesel) of nearly 400 tons. Sure it could have probably slogged away at a pedestrian 15 - 20 mph and got there in the end but in the "old" days it would have almost certainly had assistance in some shape or form (a 2P at least) with that load. Given that the Carlisle -Leeds service was not too far behind you cannot be surprised at the diesel being involved. This is after all 2015 and not 1955.

Looking at Becky's video above what is there not to be thrilled by? The loco is in its right environment, working well, sounds great and looks good. I guess that is just how it would have have appeared in days of yore with a load of say 250 tons doing about 35-40 mph. The diesel is only taking the excess load and not doing all the work. It is keeping steam on the main line allowing locos to earn their keep and very few passengers expressed any concern about it being there. Those I spoke all had a good day out and the train was full.

I guess that you can please some of the people some of the time..........

I look at that last shot Henry and think aren't we so lucky to be able to see and photgraph steam in such great locations, particularly when you get the sun switched on at the right time.

Best way for video files is link to it on youtube.
Picture should upload fron your pc using the upload file button but it may have to be reduced in size, can't remember what the limit is though.
