As were pretty much in leaf fall season, should we expect a diesel on the back ?

Maybe, maybe not. There is a L/E move from Hellifield to York in the afternoon: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U50661/2015/10/10/advanced Of course, it might just be a second DL. I guess it depends, in part, on whether the whole set is turned at Carlisle, requiring a loco at each end, or the Steam loco (and support coach) is turned separately. This appears to be the turning move: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U50662/2015/10/10/advanced

I think after 46115 stalled in Cowran cutting a few years back at a similar time of year ( if I remember rightly ) the safe option has been to have the 47 on since then just incase .

If you look at the timings at Blackburn on the way out in 5098's post above, doesn't that suggest top and tail diesels with one of them being left at Hellifield and heading over to York?

Agreed. If you trace back the WCRC stock movements, it stables in Derby overnight before proceeding to Leicester via reversals at St Mary's Junction and Stenson Junction, and then of course a third reversal at Leicester and a fourth at Blackburn. So top and tail diesels to Hellifield, steam with one diesel on the back to York, then the other diesel that has come down from Hellifield resumes top and tail diesel operation from York, with reversals at Leicester and Derby North Junc. still to come.

The only other possibility is that both diesels proceed light engine from Hellifield to York. Somewhat unlikely, I feel!

Am I reading the timings rightly in that it goes via the York avoider? Has a steam hauled passenger train (as opposed to light engine turning moves) covered this in preservation? It's certainly very uncommon.

Yes it certainly looks like that, probably as NR don't want the train sitting in a platform at York whilst they change locos. On a previous trip, the loco was changed in Holbeck before pulling into the station to pick up passengers.

    A Thingy...
On the strength of the avoider (and hopefully some decent mileage behind 46115 to edge me closer towards clearing it for one), I've just booked it... Although, admittedly I'm waiting for the moment when we arrive at Skelton Junction and the signalman sends us left instead of right!

Lovely clips enhanced by the absence of any panning. And the diesel was just carrying its weight. Why can't it always be like that?

A great day for Leander indeed. Great to see her in top class condition.
