Tom has just posted a very sensible request to the genie, but I’m going to wander off into a fantasy world and wish for the reinstatement of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway:).

How about one of the ones in the north? Just think of all those LMS/LNER classes which might've survived .... but don't think overlong, it's too sad to dwell on.

How about what the genie could do to some people? Repentance and compensation from the WSR ex-6. Close amicable co-operation between WHHR and FR/WHR. A change of heart by the Peak Rail management and the landowners in the Rother Valley.

I think mine would be one that is theoretically possible albeit colossally unlikely: John Cameron, impressed by the work of the A1 Trust decides that rather than retire his two locomotives to his farm will pay for them to be repaired and fully overhauled, then run and cared for by the A1 guys, making the Darlington shed a major centre for LNER preservation and mainline steam.

    Won't happen, but it's a nice daydream.

Agreed it's a nice daydream but the difference is, this one is theoretically still possible even if, as you rightly mention, highly unlikely.

Still, where would we be without dreams...???

The Genie says - 'these are big tasks - I can do one but not all of them, where above everywhere else would you like to see peace and love reign?'

Some of the difficulties are likely to be resolved in the fullness of time by other means (litigation, compulsory purchase order, etc). So perhaps the genie's magic would be most usefully employed at Peak Rail. But what does anyone else think?

How about it turns out the strategic reserve really does exist, and is discovered intact and in good condition. ;)

There'd be a massive row on here about whether all those mint-condition, well-maintained 9Fs were too big for most preserved lines.

No, the other strategic reserve - you know, the one that is full of Dean goods and Metro tanks?!! That's the one that my genie will find anyway. ;)

Quite apart from the one about whether they should all be painted plain black, lined black, fully lined Brunswick green..........

Surely the Strategic Reserve would have to be full of King Arthurs?

So have we been looking in the wrong place for the Strategic Reserve all these years...??? It's not in a siding in Box Tunnel, maybe it's under Glastonbury Tor...

All these years we've been rebuilding branch lines and we should have been dowsing ley lines.

Maybe we've been rebuilding the wrong branch lines, the one we have overlooked is the secret S&DJR one from the Highbridge branch running through the hidden tunnel under the Tor, we'd have found those 9F's years ago.

Is that one hidden under Plymouth Hoe, or maybe somewhere in the dockyard...??

Thank you for the link, it was what I had in mind by suggesting under Plymouth Hoe as I figured that it might be a little difficult hiding a Lord Nelson in a hammock, unless of course we are referring to Horatio himself.
