46115 was doing next to nothing at Armathwaite on the return, could barely hear it. Fire risk?

46115 was definitely doing more of the work away from Carlisle - the 47 was working, but nowhere near full power IMO.

Storming ascent of Wilpshire Bank tonight. 47 assisting, but again, not full power.

Makes total sense in this hot weather as no point starting any fires .

Why bother with the sham at all, they're not kidding anyone, might as well run it diesel only and have done with it.

Footage of 46115 making a spirited departure from Long Preston this evening, then climbing past Langho and coasting down through Pleasington.

Maybe the diesel assistance could also be in order to make the firemans job a bit easier in the extreme temperatures.

Wasn't doing a great deal at Aisgill either...more smoke from the 47 than 46115......

I strongly suspect, as has been said before, that quite a few people on board just want to see a steam locomotive at/near the front. Regardless of any other motive power involved.

A key point to me is if paying customers know what they are going to get hauling/pushing the train in time to make an informed choice as to travelling or not. And to be given a fair choice of alternatives if a diesel is added after bookings have been made. As Ben/ Vintage Trains often do.

For the loco owners I imagine they still get some income to help keep the loco running on the mainline even when a diesel is in the consist sometimes. Money they may not get at all, or to the same extent, if the train was run just by diesel as you suggest.

As for linesiders. Shep's excellent photos above need a lot of examination to just be able to pick up a diesel, and then only in one of the two photos.

Don't often hear on Nat Pres about the poor so and so who has to shovel a lot of heavy coal into a very hot fire in blistering summer heat Ralph.

Lets be realistic here, put yourself in WCRC's shoes. Its the hottest day of the year,ORR are watching your every move, your locomotives have "previous" in the lineside fire starting department. What would you do?

Too many people forget about the fireman, having fired in Poland in the summer on an Ol 49 with the enclosed cab, I know what hot is like. And that's only playing with 3 coaches...

Are you sure about that?? :Snaphappy:.

Diesel assistance for the welfare of the fireman? All the ones I know would be more than happy to carry on without diesel assistance however hot the day. If you don't want to get a wet shirt you don't do the job. :)

The diesel assistance, as has already been stated, is about WCRC correctly acting to minimize risk on the hottest day of the year. I suspect that most of the passengers went home happy, perhaps the photographers can ask for their money back. ;)
