That's a real shame. It's never been extra to the gala rover ticket to ride the evening train(s) before. Always enjoyed the atmosphere and relaxation riding in the bar carriage on the late runs whilst enjoying a couple of nice drinks. Guess I will be taking my pennies else where this year then :-(

Never ceased to be amazed at how stingy some people are in this hobby. The cost of bringing four tender locos to the railway for this gala must be horrendous and here is someone carping at paying an extra £10 to enjoy part of the event. Talk about cutting one's nose to spite their face. Ah well - I suppose it takes all sorts. I'm sure that there are plenty of others who will enjoy the event and consider it value for money.

Never ceased to be amazed at the arrogance of people when it comes to having a detailed working knowledge of someone else's contributions to such events or their contributions in general to "this hobby".

I never said I was avoiding the event just meant that I would buy my evening drink in a pub instead

Knowing how much some of my mates can drink, the £10 will be the cheapest part of the evening. :)

When you've already bought your £30 day rover, to be asked for a further £10 to then stay on later will be viewed as a reason to find elsewhere by some while others will see no harm in supporting SR. £10 is good value if you only come for the 2x evening trips, but when you've already paid your entrance fee once it's not so enticing. Being devils advocate - How many other attractions as a whole charge people entry twice for 1x event?

Personally I would of looked at other solutions, but I'm not in charge so I'll just do my best as a volunteer to support this event and hopefully make it the success it deserves to be. 5x Bulleids might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's certainly one hell of a way to mark the 50th Anniversary events for the End of BR(S) Steam.

I just get the impression that some people have absolutely no idea of the cost of staging such an event. Swanage Railway have to cover their costs somehow and this seems to me a very reasonable way of doing it. How can you complain about an all day entertainment for just £40. Surely such a show has to be value for money at such a low price. I suspect that Swanage are taking a real financial risk with this event and I hope it pays off for them.

I take your point about costs Peter but thinking about it 34053 and 34081 have already worked together at 2 different railways, and now they've made a trip to a third, I'm sure all 3 railways would have negotiated with the haulage company, and there would have been some sort of deal done. But I do agree an extra supplement for the Beer ex isn't unreasonable although maybe throw in something like a free pint maybe?

Not at liberty to disclose exact details but yes, there has been a sharing of transport costs where 34081 is concerned. Can't speak for 34053 though.

    My office for the weekend.....

    IMG_0707.JPG

I am lucky enough to have drawn Swanage Box late turn Fri, Sat and Sun...do give me a wave if you are visiting.

I have to admit that I am an unashamed 'unrebuilt' fan and especially looking forward to seeing 'Wells' that I have only seen stored before. I was brought up 12 miles from the city and my father's offices were there, so I'm very pleased she was saved even if she is now usually banished to the far north.

Consider her as a missionary to show the heathens the error of their ways, rather than banished ...
