Thanks, I just realised my error, in confusing him with the one named after someone at the Southern, (Useless Missenden unless I'm mistaken)

34090 Sir Eustace ('Useless') Missenden Southern Railway was also a BB, despite the WC-style nameplates.

Just seen a photo of 34027- is that the Devon coat of arms I see above the nameplate?

I have to say I've genuinely been suprised by the intrest in this train and also by the affection 34027 is held in by various people. It certainly isn't 'just another Bulleid'

    Why?......

Bulleids are good engines, original or otherwise, and they're free steamers. :) and this is coming from a Gresley affectionado.... but then Bulleid was his protege..... ;)

Also looks like you've been at the ale again judging by your post......... "fat fingers" was it?...... back to skool for you laddo...... :p

D9009 'Alycidon' plus 12 Pullman cars plus diesel, filmed at speed on the climb to Sapperton this evening running 15 mins late. A fantastic sight and sound. Class 67 on the rear NOT assisting. <BJ>

Fat Fingers and a small phone screen! And yes I have been at the ale although I hardly think 2 pints is enough to send me silly!

Depends how "big" the pints were......... I used to say to Mrs, "I'm just popping to the pub for a pint" and come back several hours later worse for wear........... :) or should that be :Saywhat:...........

34027 looked and sounded absolutely stunning today in virtually perfect weather; well worth the 240 mile round trip and 4 1/2 hours' driving. Video to follow of the WC thundering away from Hampton Loade heading north...

Not sure I agree. Whilst it follows 602 squadron it precedes the final batch of WC 91 Weymouth to 108 Wincanton. The last two are BoB. Leigh-Malory and 66 squadron. As there is no physical difference in the two classes other than nameplate if they are WC shape then its a WC

Literally 2 568ml pints mate! When Mel was living with her sister in Sheffield and I used to go see her I always used to say my train was 20 mins later than it was so I could have a few sneaky pints in the Sheffield Tap! Although I think my record was leaving the house just after 1:00pm to meet her and her sister for the 1st time at half 6 in Sheffers. My brother commented on how punctual(!) I was followed by 'I know where your going!' Thus a rather pleasant afternoon was spent in the Brunswick in Derby!

I beg to differ! If it says 'Battle of Britain Class' on the bottom scroll, then its a BB: http://www.davidheyscollection.com/userimages/000-0-a--southern-nameplate-R.jpg

It was an interesting hybrid of BB and WC features. Its layout also had to be replicated after rebuilding, when BBs and WCs were generally re-arranged to the format of crest over wing profile/scrolls: http://www.semgonline.com/steam/pics/mm_sem.jpg

The locomotive itself didn't have a particularly stellar reputation in service in original condition, hence the 'Useless' epithet. It had probably stuck by the time it was rebuilt.
