Steam Railway SR495 – on sale now!

Discussion in 'Steam Railway' started by Thomas Bright, Aug 20, 2019.

We’re getting nostalgic in the latest edition of Steam Railway, as we look back over 30 years of ‘Steam on the Met’, explore some of the finest Southern Region recreations in preservation, and conclude our NRM one hit wonder round-up.

As Metropolitan Railway ‘E’ No. 1 works in central London for the last time, editor Nick Brodrick comprehensively explores the history of preservation-era steam on the London Underground, which started 30 years ago this year, and asks what future – if any – steam has in Zone 1.

We also mark another milestone in SR495 – the 40th anniversary of the Guild of Railway Artists – and showcase some of the guild’s finest work in capturing the golden age of steam on canvas, while Thomas Bright concludes his survey of the National Railway Museum’s one hit wonder locomotives.

It’s not all about the past however. Chris Phillipson recounts his experiences of chasing ‘Big Boy’ No. 4014 across the American mid-West after the mighty 4-8-8-4 returned to steam, while Rail Accident Investigation Branch inspector Rowan Joachim explains how the government agency works with preserved railways when things go wrong.

As always, we bring you the very latest news, comment and analysis from the world of steam railway preservation, including:

    · Flying Scotsman to run until 2032

    · The Great Central Railway agrees ‘Cromwell’ loan

    · All-Party Parliamentary Group publishes its coal report

    · Ben Alder new-build project launched

    · Science & Industry Museum wins £6 million grant

There’s all this and more, including our regular main line, industrial, narrow gauge and Irish steam news columns, in the latest edition of Steam Railway – the world’s biggest selling steam magazine. On sale now.
