Steam Railway SR486 – On Sale Now!

Discussion in 'Steam Railway' started by Thomas Bright, Nov 9, 2018.

This month’s edition of Steam Railway marks the centenary of the Armistice, with a special issue dedicated to the railways’ various contributions to the First World War.

Railway historian Rob Langham examines the role of the Railway Operating Division on the Western Front, as well as how the famous ‘Jellicoe Specials’ kept the Royal Navy fleet, anchored at Scapa Flow, fed with vital supplies of coal.

Richard Foster – editor of our sister title Model Rail – provides a complete run-down of all the British locomotive classes deployed overseas during the 1914-18 conflict, and explores the history of a design forever associated with the First World War: the mighty Great Central ‘8K’ 2-8-0s.

We also look at the role the diminutive SECR ‘P’ class 0-6-0Ts played during the war and the efforts to restore No. 27 to its former glory, and the restoration of one of the most historic narrow gauge locomotives in Britain – War Office Hunslet 4-6-0T No. 303.

Continuing with the narrow gauge theme, we celebrate the long-awaited return to steam of the Vale of Rheidol Railway’s No. 7, after 20 years on the sidelines.

This edition also comes with a free Unseen Steam DVD*, with fascinating archive footage of the ‘heavyweights of steam’, featuring everything from Churchward ‘28XXs’ and BR ‘9Fs’, to Gresley ‘A4s’ and Bulleid’s ‘Merchant Navies’.

With Christmas around the corner, we present our annual festive gift guide, as well as our complete festive railway events guide.
