We present the first instalment of our brand-new ‘Living With…’ series, this month featuring our cover star – the Somerset & Dorset ‘7Fs’. Toby Jennings takes you behind the scenes of these revered 2-8-0s and puts you in the driving seat of one of the best-loved classes in preservation.

There’s also part two of David Wilcock’s incredible phoney engineman story, detailing the illicit exploits of John Wells, who took the controls of several locomotives on the main line in the 1950s and 60s – all whilst never being employed by BR.

Finally, we travel across the channel to experience authentic footplating on the Continent, as Thomas Bright takes the shovel of a mighty Polish 2-8-2 as part of the Wolsztyn Experience. Unlike the aforementioned John Wells, Thomas’ travels on the main line are all official and above board. Want to try it yourself? Thomas tells you how.

You can also vote in this month's Steam Railway poll. Which locomotive's return to steam this year have you been most excited about? Vote for your favourite here.

Elsewhere we have the very latest news, comment and analysis from the world of steam preservation – featuring the latest on the ‘T3’, the Mid-Hants buying No. 73096, who’s won the contract to build The Unknown Warrior’s boiler and Didcot’s small engine overhaul plan.

You can read all this and more in the latest edition of Steam Railway – the world’s best-selling steam magazine. On sale now!
