That's a really worthwhile exercise. Thanks. So there was, as everyone thought, a downwards trend in the number of trips that actually ran and only a slight increase in the number of 'on train failures' - less than you might have thought reading these pages - but many more substitutions (that probably also helped the previous statistic).

And the prize for the depot(s) looking after the most reliable locomotive(s) goes to.....? Looks to me like a place in the Midlands and a place in London.

See the number which ran with boxes has gone up threefold, 16 against 5!

What about the works in Lancashire/Greater Manchester which supplied one (or two) locos for The Jacobite almost every day from the beginning of June to the end of October?

I suspect the miles per casaulty figure is the one that will come under increasing scrutiny in future, while it's not brilliant that it's slightly up in 2012, it does seem rather consistant than a massive jump, and that percentage is still low enough to not be of major concern.

Looking back on 2012, we do need to really appreciate all the hard work that have gone into these steam hauled charters.

The organising of train crews, catering crews, support crews, touring company staff, rolling stock movements, servicing points, planning, and the many other people involved in the process has been a major logistics operation.

Many people have enjoyed the experience. 500 journeys carrying, lets say, 350 pax, gives you 175,000 passengers alone, plus those who just turn up at stations enroute, or other line side locations, to see, or photograph, the charters as they go by.

But what of the future. In 2013 we can probably expect a similar or smaller number of planned charters, yet looking at the number of locomotives that will be available i.e, ones that were approved for main line operation in 2012/2013, plus ones expected to be released from works for operation in 2013, I feel that supply of locomotives could outstrip demand, or the number of "trips" per locomotive minimal, therefore giving the owners a bit of a headache.

Perhaps current loco pools will become bigger, or more geographical pools, but this would be subject to the touring companies looking at different markets, start points, destinations, for examples, this would also increase the operational and logistics required, etc. This could impact on the all the various crews above, plus rolling stock, being actually available to cover the "jobs" not only in 2013 but for next 5 years, for example.

There will be a market I feel sure, it will be reasonably expensive, but a lot of people will still attracted to the "away day with a steamer on the front". You just need to travel on the trains and see how members of the public enjoy the experience.

    Interesting times.

just to expand on the figure it's probably not absolute science so assume +/- a few, but the general picture is there, ( for instance I dont know of any failures / cancelations of Jacobites or which locos did how many turns on this route etc)

    2012: 598 possible, 70 canceled =528 trips run.

    2011: 591 possible, 43 canceled =548 trips run.
    2010: 590 possible, 60 canceled =530 trips run.

definitely less overall tours this year to last year

    one statistic to add..

Advertised on UK Steam as fully booked (probably not an indicative metric, but one can assume if it was updated on the site, it was probably a sellout some time in advance)..
    2012: 28 trips
    2011: 23 trips
    2010: 27 trips

one could assume load factors overall in 2012 to be better, as less trips have been run.. but a similar number of trips sold out well in advance..
so in reality.. high utilised locomotives, and less tours, but similar sell out rates... must be more efficient and therefore more viable.
one noted difference this year to previous is the operators listed their tours for the year much earlier than previous years, a quick look at 2013 suggests also a similar level of organisation.

Edit: ive revisited my figure on the number of trips possible.. (It seemed too low).. it appears I removed the Jacobites and Scarboroughs twice not once ! I have revised my maths and crossed my palm with a ruler !

As pennance heres a breakdown as advertised (before cancelations etc) by promotor (ive excluded Jacobite/Scarboroughs and one offs, or one year companies (AMEX etc))

Interesting stuff. I want to express my thanks to all those involved in EVERY aspect of mainline steam through 2012. it's no walk in the park, on many levels. Just as a personal opinion, I think it has worked best when operator/owners etc work closely and well with NR and other TOCs. One example is some of the Tyseley trips, but there were others too of course.
Anyway, thanks for keeping the dream alive for all of us! Here's to 2013

Mods!! buseng's identity must have been stolen! The bright sunny character we know and love on here would not be moaning about a minor negative statistic like that, surely? Perhaps you should suspend that account while you investigate........ no need to rush though.....

These stats are great, but they start to play with your mind!

Did you include the Shakespeares as 11 or 22 (technically we run 2 round-trips from Birmingham to Stratford for 11 Sundays). However added it up for the last 2 years, please keep it the same.

    Cheers!

Another thing to bear in mind is that 2012 was heavily affected, particularly in the London and Weymouth areas for 5 weeks in the mid summer due to a minor sporting event in East London & Portland. RTC did use this opportunity to operate the Royal Dutchy jobs, when Weymouth was unavailable on Sundays, but the midweek Weymouths got buried in the sands of time.

    Hey Ben,

I could only count it as on the front page of UK Steam's website so as 1 , but yes you would be correct 2 trips ! (I counted Jacobite as 2 in the 10 weeks it was 2 trips, though it was 2 different locos/stock so really 2 distinct tours)..
    I'll go back and edit.

Update: According to UK Steam, thats 11 Shakespeares in each year of 2010,11 and 12..
Have retro updated the figures.. number of departures from Birmingham climbed up the rankings.. :)

Also what do people think about Looe Branch Shuttles.. it's as 1 trip currently x2 weekends... is it 1 day or 5 return trips each day ?
    what do people think ?

If the trip has a new set of passengers then I think it is a new trip.

So what does that mean for the Scarborough Spa Express, where passengers may join for just part of the trip (e.g. morning circle, York - Scarborough & back, eveing circle etc)?

When I tried to do a similar count a couple of years ago, I worked on the basis of "daily operations" so the SSE, Shakespeare Express and Looe trains would each have counted as one operation on each day they ran, but I counted multi-day tours such as the Great Britain as multiple operations. There was only one Jacbote per day at that time, so I'm not sure how I would now count that - possibly as two operations as they are two distinct trains.

...bring the NYMR operations into the calculations and it gets even more complicated! I think I counted them as one operation per day, even though there would be several trips from Grosmont to Whitby, using possibly more than one loco and set of stock.

Which ever method you use it should be the same for all trips that are shuttles/repeat in the same day.

In which case the Shakespeares could be classed at 3 trips. 2 return trips from Brum, and 1 one return trip from Stratford.

Personally I'd count the Shakespeares at 2 operations, Scarboroughs as one. When the Jacobite runs twice a day, that's two operations. The railmotor to Looe would be 5 trips each day.

Agreed. and each leg was advertised as an individual trip in it's own right too if I'm not mistaken ?
