14/100.. 48112 .In the early 1950s I noted a number of 8Fs had a large letters X painted on both cab sides ,these could be seen on Toton to Brent coal trains. These loco's had hand operated blow down valves. They were allocated to Toton and Wellingboro'.It was in connection with water softening plants installed at Toton ,Kettering Wellingboro' , Cricklewood ,and at water troughs en/route.
The painting of the Xs seemed to just go away in the late fifties, with out no one noticing them. In fact I had forgot they existed until I saw a friends photo' of a 8F painted like it a few years ago. Water softening is very good for loco' boilers but it does cause frothing ,in turn priming. So it was a way of changing the water in a loco' boiler when in steam. Complaints from residents living near Wellingboro shed resulted in the blowing down ,at night ,being banned due to noise.
The photo has a GWR Castle to the left and probably a GWR tender on the right. It could be any where I know, but maybe Oxford. Wellingboro' worked a Corby to South Wales emptie wagon train that should have changed engines at Bletchley or Swanbourne Jnc ,but often there was a engine shortage and the loco went thro to Oxford.

At one time the Corby service was booked to Hinksey where - presumably - the train was recessed and locomotive exchanges took place. There was a rumour that once - in the opposite direction - a Class 52 Western was employed and due to locomotive shortages actually worked throughout. Whilst this may be a fairy tale it was the case that as electrification reached Bletchley Class 40s would occasionally appear at Corby to work the return service - presumably having worked the incoming service to Corby.

6/54 48035 .Not Kettering .Shed building wrong shape. Garratts were not allowed on Kettering shed ,the coal bunker fowled the coal stage. Could be 18C Hasland. 14/54 48050 ,15B Kettering for sure 8050 was shedded there for a very long time.

Agree not Kettering but possibly Wellingborough given that background does not have the water softening plant visible as per that of 14/54.

48035 got to be Hasland. There is a great lack of a shed roof.

Yes that was what I was going by .Although I don't know when the roof was damaged it was like it for 8-10 years as I know. Hasland must hold the record for a missing shed roof in the country. Surprised the shed staff put up with it for so long.
