    a) commercial advantags - having locomotives in different colours to sell more souvenirs.
    b) it looked good.

    Trains look boring when they're all in one colour. The public like a mixed bag of stuff, generally. Black engines and red coaches? Snore. Red, green, improved engine green, blue, brown, black - that's much more inspiring to go look at.

    Ant - that reminds me - we need to track down the official Manning Wardle brown...
