Come on Fireblanket, as an Engineer you make an excellent Solicitor! They are coupling rods and the cranks are mounted on the wheels. Connecting rods connect the crossheads to the cranks on a normal steam loco. Thanks for the drawing, it restores my faith in you.

Re: Kent and East Sussex 'GERVAISE'.

Sorry to spoil an internal banter session with an update, but these things happen...

The new frame stretchers have been installed. The new centre frame stretcher was installed first, followed by the other 5 stretchers. These were then drilled and fixed in place. The next task will be to fit buffer beams and drawhook boxes. This I am informed will be taking place in the next week or so....

The pictures from http://jedwards.fotopic.net/p54649874.html onwards show this work being undertaken in the last week.

Another quick update.... The bufferbeams have been manufactured, together with the dragboxes. They were fitted this week, as the two pics show....

The frames have now been moved out of the workshop while smaller components are manufactured. This has given the opportunity to get several pictures in daylight!

    http://jedwards.fotopic.net/p54909758.html

    1) General Chassis Photo - Shows all the new frame stretchers and buffer beams + draw boxes installed

    2) View of central area of chassis, in which you can see:

    - The big new machined middle stretcher, that weighs over 1 ton. Its designed to give the whole chassis some rigidity for first time since much of its strength was removed by Sentinel in the locos on site 1928 conversion. It also puts back a bit of the 3 tons adhesive loco weight lost in the 1928 rebuild.

    - Seen above the rear end of this big stretcher is a small 100 x 100 'H' section beam that will support the rear end of the water tank.

    - The pair of channel stretchers to the left of the picture will be used to take the engine unit torque reaction arm and support the front of the water tank.

    - The pair of 200 x 100 channel stretchers seen to the far right of the picture, toward the back of the loco and about 3 feet apart, will support the Sentinel vertical boiler.

    3) Buffer beam picture. The buffer beams are new. In the middle the box like structure in the centre of the buffer beam has been cut out the middle of an HAA coal wagon chassis and forms the drawhook pocket - that will take two hooks also recovered from an HAA at Booths. Either side of these pockets are new webs and stiffeners to give the whole buffer beam assembly rigidity.

Tis the season for an update! The work on Gervase has started again, and will continue for a while. The outer side valances have been refitted after a LOT of repairs, and the buffers have also been fitted. The next jobs, to be tackled next week, is installing the spring hanger supports and axlebox push rods.

Good to see such rapid progress on what was a forgotten engine, looking forward to seeing it doublehead with Gasbag at some point in the future. =P~

Re: Kent and East Sussex 'Gervase'.

A very small project update. The wheelsets have finally been completed, and will be going back to the main restoration site on Tuesday, for reuniting with the frames. The frames are to be blasted again, to get rid of any non-essential shards left over by the strengthening works.

    The wheelset pics are at:

Re: Kent and East Sussex 'Gervase'.

More progress has been made, including a change of address!

Gervase has now been re-wheeled, and the results look fabulous. A spare boiler has been fitted into the frames as a pattern for measuring up. The boiler that will end up on Gervase is presently being worked on, and using this one allows work to continue.

Re: Kent and East Sussex 'Gervase'.

Yet another update! The boiler and firebox for Gervase have now arrived at a certain works in the south-east, where they have been inspected by the boiler inspector. He has passed them as basically sound, with some minor works needed. These are being undertaken on a contract basis, and when finished will represent one of the major achievements so far.

Pictures of the boiler and firebox are available at:

    http://jedwards.fotopic.net/p56656567.html

    and subsequent pics....

That firebox was the last one supplied to British Railways for use in their Sentinel locos. Made by Spurr, Inman of Wakefield in 1956 and cost £250. Bought unused by the Middleton Railway in 1961 for £50 and was last used in their LNER Y1/2. Just a bit of useless information!

    Amazing progress!

What do you think this beast will be able to pull, once it's up and running? Was it ever steamed at the KESR?

Re: Kent and East Sussex 'Gervase'.

Gervase was the first KESR loco of the preservation era, arriving in 1962. It was steamed for trial trips, works trains, shunting etc. during the 1960s but I think it was out of use by the time the railway re-opened in 1974. I remember seeing it derelict but still complete at Northiam in the late 70s. Nick Pallant, in his book Holding The Line, describes it as "reliable, very powerfull but rather slow".

I doubt Gervase will be able to haul KESR passenger trains at line speed but will be a very interesting loco for special events. KESR are also currently restoring Marcia, a small Peckett 0-4-0 which arrived soon after Gervase but has has also been out of use for many years. Embsay's website says their Sentinel has been useful for carriage heating on cold days since steam can be raised in 45 minutes.

    Another progress update.

Recent work has been concentrated on the brake and steam heat systems. The pictures are now at:

It's looking good. I'll have to have a JDO to see the progress first hand.
