Handy location for servicing on Carlisle trips, but like you say, not much use for anything else. Or it could just be a storage location for the amount of stock they own? Crewe is packed, so having a secure shed elsewhere might be useful for stock that isn't used that often, or is awaiting overhaul. Easier to have your own base rather than hiring siding space at Kidderminster, Eastleigh, etc.

Well, if you're running a regular service over the Settle and Carlisle it makes sense to have a base at one end of it. Might it be a staging post for operations in Scotland - wasn't there a rumour that LSL were looking at the recently-closed depot it Scotland, the name of which escapes me.

    St Rollox
Edited after a late arrival home, not St Rollox, I meant Springburn.

Definitely Springburn. Hope this could be resurrected as it could mean more steam in Scotland outwith the Jacobite. Would increase the chances of both SNG and Bittern as well as Blue Peter appearing at their old depot of Ferryhill.

I'll tell you what you have to admire their marketing budget, we seem to be getting a leaflet through the door just about every other day about their various trains.

Indeed, their marketing is very slick. They seem to post out flyers in the post to each local area that a train picks up at. Ones to advertise specific trips, plus ones that list all forthcoming trips from your local station for the rest of the season. I have even seem their flyers in the "local events" leaflet racks of my local supermarket. I have had people at work who aren't interested in trains at all ask me if I am going on such and such a trip with Saphos or Statesman, as they have had a leaflet about it. Of course, nine times out of ten the answer is yes!

Over the past 2 summers it was 46100 and 70000(2020) and 45231 and 46100(last year) going south.

Think that 34046 and 70000 would be a good combination this year. Just speculation.

"The Royal Charter" is not a good choice of name. A ship of that name sailed from Australia and had got most of the way to Liverpool when it was caught in a storm off Anglesea with great loss of life https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Charter_(ship)

I would've thought there'd be diesel on the back for the air cons.

A general thought. There can't be much more of a signal to pure steam dinosaurs that with a set-up as rich as Saphos/LSL where they could afford to run with just a set of Mark 1s, the (public?) need for air con coffins requires a diesel to be in the mix.

It's the stark reality of meeting the public's needs, it seems.
