Most certainly not 'Russell' was built with an air pump fitted, it's the vacuum that is the later adition.

Thanks for looking for the pic, I guess I'll just have to put the museum on the list of places I'd like to go!

Bet I was closer to being dead than you!!!! #-o

If Chris has not passed on my thanks, then Thanks for sorting out the Christmas present. I was rather taken aback! It has rather upped the anti on the Wife's Christmas present buying. Although how next year you are going to wrap up and deliver the whole loco is beyond me =P~

See you at the farm latter this year!

    Re: Russell 2009

No need for a sand box on the running board as RUSSELL(2009) with have the boiler mounted sand box, without looking it up I cannot say what year these were removed, but this picture is datable by both the removal of the boiler sand box and the shape of the front buffer beam, both of which are inaccurate for RUSSELL in 1906(2009) condition.

Blast!.. and I quite liked that box too! (but not as much as a bucket!) ;-)

    Them rivets look pretty original... and yes, I have counted them all... =;

Interestingly, we did make a replica of that box. I think it's still around somewhere, though I can't find a photo of Russell carrying the replica box in preservation.

Things you might notice when you see Russell in one piece again......
    - The front buffer beam will have rounded corners, and not the angular bites removed
    - It has guard irons (they hang down in front of the front pony truck wheels
    - The coal rails will be longer (when it ran from 1987-2003, they weren't quite right)
    - It will have a working sand pot
    - The smokebox door will have a ring of rivets around it (they attach the baffle plates on the inside)
    - The air pump will be the correct size (the one carried from 1987 was slightly too large)

As for the rivets on the tank, I'll make no comment. They're indirectly the cause of me standing for the WHR Ltd Board. ](*,)

Now that sounds like a future award winner! Nice to see such effort going into creating the correct look - well done.

Didn't realise the air pump was original - WHR leading the way!

Funnily enough I was made painfully aware of this fact last weekend when I was instructed to re-profile a "replica" Russell front buffer beam which is being fitted to the frames of a certain 0-8-0!

Another thought on Russell - considering all the effort that is going into this amazing restoration, what chance would there be of borrowing the original plates from the NRM? Anthony? help?? (ok it's just a thought!) 8-[

If I recall correctly they were borrowed for the relaunch back in 1987 so its certainly something to consider for his return. Incidentally I AM offically sad, and I have counted all the rivets on the tanks and we will be having a riveting themed competition in the next couple of months to win one of these.

    Details soon.

Out of interest, did the original WHR have/use a crest and if so, is it the same as that used by WHHR today?
A crest doesn’t seem to feature in old photographs so is something that was created 1964 on?

My understanding was that the NRM had "lost" one of the original plates, and that only one survives? Not sure where I read/heard this so can't check it out!
