And 34067 in 2013. Also think 46201 did it in either 2012 or a bit later.

I am surprised that RTC has dropped the "Welsh Borderer". My wife and I were on 34046's run and it was a superb day out. It had everything - serious hill-climbing (Sapperton, Colwall, Llanvihangel), plenty of fast running, the wonderful semaphores between Worcester and Malvern Wells and superb scenery. A sunny day, a Bulleid Pacific in top form on the front and no diesel on the back - what more could one want? Tangers had a few problems after Hereford on the 2013 train, but she looked pretty good going past Malvern Wells signal box. 34067 malvern wells.jpg

Yes, 34046 in 2014 was brilliant, as was the day as a whole. The run down from Hereford was remarkable. Ray Poole really made her sing. I agree, that itinerary sits next to The Tin Bath as an unmissable trip but you do have the issues over fitting locomotives across through Malvern. Nothing that double headed 5s wouldn't solve though. Now that would be a trip and a half if Ian Riley would allow them to do that circuit.

Absolutely. I'm looking forward to them coming south for the RTC December programme. A fitting finale for a year which, both on the main line and on several South of England heritage lines, has seen a lot of LMS visitors.

I know that it is probably an expensive option in terms of resources (coal/water etc) and also crews, but the double headed arrangement really addresses all the potential issues such as: acceleration, handling big trains and (whispering this one because we are talking about Riley's finest) possible loco difficulties. There are few lines that really require 75 mph running - just the ability to get on with it quickly and tackle hills, that these two can do comfortably.

Here's hoping that @Ian Riley continues to make his engines available in this combination and that the tour promoters and WCRC are prepared to call on them.
