Well having had a trip around Mull and Iona with the similar TS King George V in her last season of operation from Oban, I would think that any foray into deeper water could be a 'lively' experience - the KGV certainly had her passengers heading for the rail when encountering the Atlantic swell on rounding Mull!!

I do hope that comment was not in a racist remark. Phillipinos are great workers and put many British workers to shame

Back to the subject of PS Queen Mary i sincerely hope that if restored to working order then she should be restored to as near original as possible and therefore as a steamer and not on diesel power

I really cannot see HOW the remark could be taken as racist in any way, shape or form ! For the record, the ship under discussion was an 'SS' (orTS) not a 'PS.'

As John will agree - many of the stewards on board blue sea cruises are from that neck of the woods, and many more countries too!

The cruising world has far wider horizons, and far greater tolerance of many issues than some that I could name!

International shipping is well known to be a multicultural industry, not just the crew, but the ships registry, company head quarters, trading currency, maintenance etc etc.

Far more so than aviation, which has much more regulation in place.

As for nationality, by it's international nature, the industry hires people from nationalities that will take the wage offered, nothing racist about that, having worked in Manila it is very easy to see what an amazing oppourtunity the industry offers, not to mention superior living conditions, that country opened my eyes far more than any other I have worked... In short it's not the salary, it's the lifestyle offered, is one much better than is on offer "at home".

The UAE (dubai, abu dhabi, el ain etc) as a country works the same way in it's immigration salary controls, theres thousands of people from the indian and Asian continent employed there, who prefer the lifestyle and oppourtunities than the same low wage offered at home.

I think at the moment we just have to pray that she is saved let alone restored back to a steam ship.

If she exists there is always a chance at a later date, but if she is broken up then its game over.

Auction is next Wednesday 24th, I'm hoping if sold, it's to someone who cares about the heritage value and will keep her intact and accessible

Never really been that passionate about boats/ships however after seeing a piece on the local news earlier in the week about this ship, I can see what all the fuss is about. I know it is early, but is there any idea about how the auction went? Well I hope!

I assume you mean this report? If you read it carefully, that report is actually only about the ship being put up for auction.

It has been reported on another forum that she did not sell - confirmed by the auction house here

Thinking seriously, if bought, what use could she realistically be put to, that would ensure a sufficent income to cover her on-going maintenance?

Post number 14 suggests a way forward, with the right investment.

She has indeed not been sold - I am waiting for any information from Gordon Stewart at the moment.

She is a uniquely pocket sized opportunity for either coastal cruising on a mixed pleasure / multi day cruise basis, or conference / retail / exhibition space in connection with Glasgow Life - who - in typical modern public sector museum management style - have run a mile from her, preferring to put their efforts into their ultra modern tin shed which we are all supposed to fawn over as a magical piece of modern art, or such heritage activities as "Sky Ride" - bunch of no marks!
