The Deltic prototype made a rare open air appearance during the Ribble's diesel gala last weekend (5 - 6 October). Here are six photos, including two night shots:

I never liked the nose on it. Bit too much American influence IMO

    • Just out of curiosity does the prototype still have its engines and traction equipment , i assume its not been restored by the NRM to operational status? as a prototype i assume that spare parts from a scrapped production loco could not be used , when it was placed in york museum if there was a plan to revive it. from the NRM

The loco is virtually complete, allegedly some engine parts are removed.

Last chance on 3rd & 4th October to see this iconic loco in it's home city of Preston

I thought it had been withdrawn from service due to severe engine damage.

It was, the DPS guys know the full story. EE put engine castings into the loco for display, not complete engines - which were removed and used elsewhere, being a different pattern to the engines in the production locos

But what a sight when you first heard and saw one, nothing like anything you had ever seen before. A remarkable step change in railway motive power.

And it's been out on another jolly today on a Teddy Bears'Surprise; last chance tomorrow as the NRM are recalling it for exhibition at Shildon later this month.

The loan expires at the end of the month Fred anyway, it's just coming back a week early...

I never realised how high the nose on a class 14 really was - it's pretty much the same as the deltic's

    DP1 leaving Preston tomorrow - I'm afraid I don't know the times.

UPDATE 2 - current eta is 5ish - split across 3 low loaders (1 bogey on each & then the body)!

Yeah, they are not as small as you assume they are.
