Yeah, I've been eyeing up that old 08 in the EWS yard for some time.... I think there's potential.

I was under the impression that green was unusual for the 28xxs.

3822 was built in 1942 and therefore was out-shopped in wartime all over black livery, the only deviation that the 38Mob make to the correct livery is that the GWR on the tender is full shaded and shadowed, it should be just a straw coloured GWR. That is also why the cab side windows are blacked-out, this was another wartime change.

    A nice Kruger or Aberdare......

Or perhaps a convertable to run on the broadgauge, we should be able to swap the wheels over in a couple of hours!

I must talk to the mob sometime as to where they got the drawings and for that matter had made, the blackout curtains for the 38. 3650 would be real cosy in the winter with the two curtains up (Hmmm toasty).... the hooks are still there and would be a lot easier to put up than the 38's which probably needs an instruction manual as to what goes where!

    Baldric where are ya?

Nah, only those engines painted during 42-45 were black. I don't know where this idea that they were always black has come from, but it am wrong! 3822 actually came out in 1940, so would've been green to begin with, like 3650. To be honest I think the shaded lettering on the 38 is right. There was an unshaded form of GWR, but it was to a different style, and seems to have originated from Caerphilly - 6697 currently sports an example this.

If you look at daytime pictures of tender engines in the war, you often find that the blackout screens have just been slung over the top of the cab, rather than completely taken off. Not surprising really - I can assure you that you do not want to try and put them up in a hurry!

    Ah ok...

I try to avoid paint-frothing, but they do look good in black, whichever version. Much more powerful and workmanlike than the usual "shiny toy" GWR green liveries.

I dunno, the GWR unlined green looks quite humble compared to say a fully lined out Castle.

3650 externally complete, but still in undercoat.

Don't worry, 3650 will still go blue shortly. Gotta get a few layers of undercoat on first, besides, when we finally get rid of the blue, it'll give us something to rub down to. Can't really miss that green can you??

There's still a few jobs to do, the most important is to locate a 1" to 1 1/4", 12 tpi taper tap (1:8) for this darn three way adapter that's holding us up. Any body got one we can borrow? It's the same spec as a washout plug, just smaller.
At least in this photo the tanks are full to the brim for the first time since the 60's.

Just a little teaser of 3650 in "Stephenson Clarke" blue. (photo G. Drew)
Why the dust sheet?? Well.... we want the first exclusive pics when the lettering is finished!!

A couple more Saturday's work will see 3650 ready for final inspection. I'll post again when we have
any running in dates or when 3650 is in steam (probably 3 to 4 weeks).

She was on one of the turntable roads on saturday at didcot. It looked like they were doing work on the brakes. The lettering is on but still covered by the sheet though you can see the S where the sheet had blown back abit. Any idea when she starts running in. Also anyone know when 5322 is due out seems like ages ago she first steamed.
    Many thanks colin

Last time I saw 5322 she appeared to be in undercoat.

I too would like to know when 5322 will be seen in action.

(Sorry it is off topic - but it is still the same venue)
