We have other reasons for visiting Pickering than just the NYMR. Or so my wife insists on telling me!

The NYMR steam service now seems to be settling down a bit, with 76079, 44806 and 45428 all due to run today. 80136 has been to Goathland on running in turns and 61264 has been undergoing weighing and valve setting ahead of its insurance exam on Friday. There is an unconfirmed report that 80136 may haul its first test train on Friday and 61264 is likely to follow soon, I would have thought (barring unforeseen problems) - that should bring the fleet to 5 with three Whitby engines by the end of next week. S160 6046 should re-enter traffic at some point soon I'd have thought (don't know has been/is wrong with it) and the Q6 should be back from by the end of next week so the steam fleet should be in a much better place by early August.

As someone who swings both ways, today has been brilliant. I managed to travel behind 76079, 45428, 44806, 26038 and 25278 with the highlight being runs behind 76079 and 26038. The type 2's really have to work hard with a 7 coach load and 76079 is always entertaining. It's a shame the S160 and Q6 aren't around but I'll have to try and make a return visit to sample them later this year.

61264 has moved for the first time in 18 months today! I would guess that following the period of running in, she will be kept between Pickering and Grosmont for a bit to make sure everything is running smoothly before going onto Whitby!

Will 61264 require a loaded test run on the EVL after such major work on its wheels? I'm sure hat the NYMR would like another Whitby engine asap.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is pleased to have hit a hat-trick with three steam engines back on track after overhauls. 80136 is the third locomotive to emerge from the ever-busy Motive Power Depot, running for the first time on Tuesday 23rd August.

80136 follows the return to steam of two more locomotives that have been out of action for around eighteen months each. 44806, a “Black Five” locomotive built in 1944, needed a new tender and general overhaul of running gear – she returned on 21 July. Meanwhile 61264, a 1947 “Thompson B1” and one of only two in existence, had been sidelined with cracks in her main driving wheels, necessitating them being removed, sent away for specialist repair and refitted to the loco.

One of the major milestones in restoring a steam locomotive is that moment when the boiler is reunited with the frames; a moment which occurred for 80136 on 21 June 2016. She passed her insurance exam just one month later on 21 July – a very quick turnaround indeed! After finishing touches and a new coat of paint, all that was left was to track down and fix a mysterious leak in one of the main steam pipe joints and she was ready to haul her first passengers.

80136 is a British Railways Standard Class 4 Tank, she was built in Brighton in 1956 and retired in 1965, just nine years later. 80136 has recently moved to the line from the Crewe Heritage Centre and arrived in April 2016 in pieces. Since then, the expert team at the Motive Power Depot in Grosmont have been working hard to get her back to working order.

Motive Power Manager, Paul Middleton and his hard-working team can’t rest on their laurels just yet. Aside from keeping all these temperamental old machines running, there are more locos approaching the end of long layoffs: the two Southern Railway locomotives “Hartland” and “Repton”, and 80135 (another Standard 4 Tank and sister to 80136) are all slated to return during 2017.

When visiting the railway, be sure to take a stroll through the tunnel from Grosmont station to visit the engine sheds and see what the team are up to!

The times are changing for the better. Last night, there were three 'spare' steam locos on shed at Grosmont (44806, 63395, & 76079) with 6046, 45428, 61264 & 80135 rostered for todays services (along with 26038 on the diesel diagram.) That's a remarkable change round in the last couple of months, when steam power was virtually non-existent,

So what's happened to make the difference? Just a change of luck, or something more interesting?

Great news and a great effort by all concerned indeed , but I thought 80135 might be a little way off yet? ;)

Several things, some of which it's hard to explain without bringing personalities into it and that I'm not prepared to do. In terms of locos, though, we have 44806 & 61264 which missed last year for various reasons and 6046 and 80136 have joined the stable with 60007 & 61994 dropping out.

Thank you. Quite happy not to have personalities dragged through on here, but also interesting to know that personalities are a factor.

I think both this year and last, by the time we have got to the stage of all the locos ready to work the loco availability has been reasonable (better this year than last due to an additional Whitby loco), I think we need to try and get to the stage where locos are available earlier. Last year we were unlucky with 45428 missing the early season, and the expectation the B1 would be available for the early season until March. This year there has been a slow increase in the number of locos until this month. Maybe one thing we should consider, is the need to think through the Winter maintenance program better, with realistic return times which can hopefully meet our service requirements!

Latest news is that the current boiler certificate for 63395 has been extended to the beginning of January so the loco will be available for the rest of the season (usual caveats.) This will bring the operational fleet up to eight locos for a short while. 6046, 44806, 45428, 61264, 63395, 76079, 76084 & 80136. Then there's a trio of gala visitors, as well. 2807, 7822 & Britomart.

NYMR really does go from one extreme to another. Having hardly visited this year due to diesels, currently it is brilliant. Yesterday, just a normal day and I dipped into: 63395, 61264, 6046 and 2807. Didn't do Whitby so missed 76079. The S160 on 8-coach diner, with chime whistle echoing through Newtondale - oh my goodness! Magic too is the occasional three engine meet, where the loco for next Whitby is in siding, then to left is the ex Pickering (to Whitby) with loco being detached, then the next Whitby - Pickering steams in.

The posting of daily roster is excellent, but do treat with caution. So far today 61264 is really 76079, 76079 is really 45428 and 6046 is really 2807!

As was said on another thread, it's not a Gala, just a normal day!

I don't really phot much these days, but a variation on the three engine meet a few weeks back enclosed, then 16th September - my goodness a GWR loco on teaks, whatever next!!

Just goes to show that Gresley Was Right:Do_O:Arghh:! Equally great to see Thompson TK 1623 on the rear, Grosmont end of the train to boot;).

That's impressive, well done to all

The SVR manages it with 4566 or (WR) 1501 as smaller engines are limited to a seven-coach teak rake, rather than six Mk Is.

4566/ 1501/ 7714 wont take 7 teaks as they go over the 2oo ton load limit. They can take 7 LMS as that amounts to 210t.

For a long time last summer, all we had off Bridgnorth was 2857 and 8 teaks.

I was very lucky today with a day on the NYMR! Some lovely views from a lovely loco.
