No.376 ‘Norwegian’

You have hit the nail on the head. As an employee of the KESR I know full well the costs and issues. sadly its one of things that I think will remain a dream...

 

She does look particularly nice.

We had King Haakon at the NVR a few years back and I believe she won quite a few friends over the Santa season... She was regarded as pretty light on her feet however and limited to 3 of the Danish coaches when not assisted by a diesel. Bearing in mind how much flatter we are than the KESR I'm surprised 376 is able to take so many up the bank.

King Haakon (the loco) also had the impressive achievement of being the loco that whisked the Norwegian Royal Family (including King Haakon, the royal) and most of the country's gold reserves away from the advancing Nazi forces and towards a Britain bound ship.

 

376 can indeed take 4 up the bank to Tenterden, but needs the air sanders working if the rails are at all damp. If the air pump stops unexpectedly, there is no air for the sanders. I have been on a train which slipped to a stand in the wet cutting for lack of air, once stopped the driver was able to re- start the pump and had no trouble re-starting the train on the gradient. Unlike on our Terriers the pump cannot be reached from the cab.

 

I member experienced Hakon but I believe from people that have it was the weaker of the pair.

Interestingly the guys in Norway disagree with the last rumour!

Well a year on from the last updates i'm pleased to say Norwegian is still in fine form.

The engine is in regular use this year on normal passenger trains alongside our Railway Experience trains.

The engine also celebrates its 100th birthday next month. We are planning a small celebration on the day itself to mark this special occasion.

However the engine will be withdrawn from traffic at the end of the year and join the queue for overhaul. However the Trustees are working on a plan to ensure the engine is kept in the best possible condition whilst in store and a thorough plan drawn up for the overhaul.

Sadly yes. The KESR locomotive roster page is not in use at present. I can only presume that the Norwegian Trust web site has not been updated in that regard.

 

I thought here would be OK as someone whom I assumed to be from the trust had posted.

Slightly gutted we never got round to inviting it CVR for a European Gala, with Hungarian 411.144 and Polish 2944 onsite also. Yugoslavia 62-669 could of added to the part too...

Maybe next ticket! A few of us would like to do such at CVR, we're just not sure if it would "sell" - or how to sell it. BR engines are fairly easy selling to a British market.

 

It has always saddened me that the Nene Valley Railway has all but given up on the European image it once cultivated. To me, the continental engines and stock make the railway more interesting. They gave it a unique selling point; where else could you compare designs from so many European countries side by side? But apparently most visiting enthusiasts only wanted to see British stock, and most of the railway's volunteers preferred to work on British stock. It is, of course up to individuals how they spend their time and money but personally I think it is little sad that people would be so narrow-minded.

They've still got the Swedish railcar in regular use, and the German Köf shunter is, I think, operational. 656 Tinkerbell is undergoing overhaul, which seems to be progressing nicely. 1178, the Swedish 2-6-2T, is still being overhauled but very slowly. Shame the Kriegslok got sold - £35,000 apparently including a spare boiler!

 

Reading recent reports/updates the Slask should be back later this year too, following its overhaul at the Flour Mill.

 

The Kriegslok was privately owned so not the NVR who sold it.
