I'd disagree - it's clear from this thread (and others relating to the joys of Dunstable) that the dreamers and chancers are identified, and called out for their absurdities. Meanwhile, it is depressing that someone so well motivated is quite so persistent at failing to observe simple advice and common sense, to such damage to his limited funds.

As for the sleeper, I sincerely hope that there is no asbestos problem. Not so much for the sake of peoples' health, important though that is, but because if there is a problem, it will reflect very badly on Stuart Reeder, the S&C, and the wider preservation movement.

I would argue that as long as the asbestos is neither exposed or damaged and contained within the fabric of the vehicle, there is no cause for alarm. (Says he who worked in a building notorious for its asbestos content.)

Each to their own I s'pose, linking to a niche Facebook page little traffic c.500 'likes' and obviously has successfully secured nowt in terms of financial support, on what is possibly the most prominent preservation website with thousands of members and fairly heavy traffic is only going to publicise the gentleman's dreams which otherwise the vast majority would have no idea of, and this thread is hardly welcoming for anyone who does not know the history and may be young and considering engaging in the movement.

    But hey ho.

I'd also add the several hundred pages of squabbling about the West Somerset Railway would be enough to put people off this movement as well.

That would be more of a concern.

Here's a thought. How many of Mr Reeders critics in this and other threads actually know him? All this narrative about ignoring advice and not listening is all well and good, but likely to be hearsay unless one/some of you step up to the plate with some 'I said/he said.'

To be fair John, much advice was given to Stuart about how he should go about a project (particularly when he was advocating new-builds), to gain public support, business plans, railway/engineering support etc. Stuart then came on here and said yes yes yes I'm going to do all those things. The next thing that happens? Another new scheme with no planning or support, so I think it's fair to say that he doesn't listen to advice.

Thanks Keith. Maybe it's better to ignore his dreams rather than expose them to 'trial by Nat Pres' and the demonisation that inevitably follows? Just saying!

    Agreed!

However, if Stuart decides to post any future plans or appeals for money on Nat-Pres, then he brings it upon himself.

Does that vary in any way from No. 2? Does anybody from the Bluebell know, as they have two of these in service as volunteer accommodation?

Stuart has contacted me directly twice in the past, at first I thought he was asking for advice. I think he struggles with very poor social skills, I found it hard not to be ruffled by his terse manner, making demands for information, firing questions at me and then not responding to my answers before moving on to the next line of interrogation.

I gave him the time of day for that particular conversation, as I am aware different people can have challenges in different areas, nevertheless I certainly won't be dealing with him for any serious railway preservation "matters".

Sounds like a number of us have had a PM exchange or two with Mr Reeder, like others I tried to offer some reasonable advice but didn't get very far.

I'm sure almost all contributors to the thread have allowed themselves a little daydream of an engine/line they would reopen as their pet project . For most of us reality in terms of finance/time/other priorities quickly strikes home

the challenge with facebook and social media is these fantasies become far more real once in social media world . likes of pages by far outweigh the voices of reality . an oft repeated plea of all these schemes is why likes doesn't convert into ££ and physical help . It becomes a whole new world with new rules that people don't understand

Love him or hate him , Stuart ultimately has been given a voice by all the likes his schemes attract , every time he is discussed here , his notoriety grows . As someone said there is no such thing as bad publicity.
