I have a nameplate from GWR loco 'Butleigh Court'. When withdrawn in the 50's it was in the BR 'red and black' style, but before it came to me it has been repainted green and black. So the present paintwork is obviously not original. Fortunately the back of the plate has been left 'unmolested'.

Any suggestions as to who I should go to to have it returned to 'red and black'?

Oh, and I live in the West Country and postage is hardly an option, but I do travel around a fair amount.

    Kind regards

    Robin White

P.s. If anyone has the matching cabside, I would be pleased to hear from them.

I would imagine that the painters at your local heritage railway would be a good start? :)

The railwayana auction houses commission repainting of nameplates from time to time, usually to undo previous restoration jobs (inevitably involving GWR plates). They will probably supply you with contact details.

Had it been stripped prior to repainting or was the green applied over the existing original finish(es)?

If the latter, it may be possible to 'excavate' the black & red with fine wet 'n' dry. Have a look at it in shallow light - preferably daylight; if there is anything under the green layer it could show up as as a raised edge.

Thank you for those helpful suggestions.

Some careful investigation appears to suggest nothing below the 'green and black' coat.

    Any thoughts about the cabside?

A replica cab side until such time as an original becomes available?

One side sold at the March 1990 Sheffield (as did one of its nameplates) so it is reasonable to assume that both sides exist, although if one side is in Didcot or similar, it presumably is not going to become available. You could consider buying any 29xx that comes along, as collectors often prefer trades to cash.

I can think of one or two folk who work in Minehead shed who make a nice job of painting the WSR locos. A little job for them?
