I know. Hopefully, so many will have popped up and resources stretched too far and the whole bubble will pop. Then we can back to restoring existing locomotives and keep steam alive in a sustainable way

For those not aware, the club sprang out of the club formed by the L&YR Newton Heath C&W depot staff's team, and was called Newton Heath LYR.

History of Manchester United F.C. (1878

The real advantage of this project is that Man U is a worldwide cash machine, and having access to their fan-base and website gives them a much better chance of raising the dosh.

Seems to me that calling it Man U is a bit of a gimmick to raise cash... Good luck to them. I have to admit that it's a very smart looking class of loco.

There are loads of engines that were saved from the cutter's torch that I'd much rather see in steam however...

I woud dearly love this to succeed, the B17s were handsome engines and one would fill a big gap in the LNER representation - certainly a bigger gap than that being filled by the Grange or County in my opinion - but the real success of "Tornado" lay not in the construction of the engne, but raising the funding. I personally doubt whether many Man U fans will contribute to it, so it will be the enthusiasm, ingenuity and drive of the fundraising team that will be central to the loco's prospects, and the same will be true of the various other projects being mooted. They're not going to be built on the back of selling mugs and keyrings I fear.

You may find that there is a third club, FC United of Manchester who obviously go by the initials FCUM.....

Perfect for them to have named her after my club and prefered choice. 61648 Arsenal. Becoming rough as the season goes on (the amount of defeats we've suffered so far and in the last few weeks is high) and relegated to secondary duties (getting stuck behind the Manchester teams and our closest rivals leaving us to try for other trophies)

Mind you relegated would have been more appropriate for the Sheffield Clubs. They've both had a rather torrid time in recent years (no offence to any Sheffield Utd or Sheffield Wednesday fans).

Under present circumstances, wouldn't it be better to name this loco. Manchester City?

Interesting as a B17 would be, I can't knowingly support or donate to a loco named that.

If you want a B17 you'd be better going for a "non footballer", simple because some choices of names attract some and deter others, no matter which one you pick.

There's a 66 GBRF have named Wolverhampton Wanderers, personally I'll give GBRF £50 to have first crack with the gas axe when it's time comes ;)

I was told a few years ago that an enthusiast in Canada bought one of the name plates when the original loco was withdrawn. The other name plate is in the NRM, Therefore the nameplate mounted on the wall at Old Trafford is a replica. Anyone able to confirm or disprove that please?

As we're talking about B17's anyone know what happened to Arsenal's nameplate or replica nameplate? This was mounted in the booking office at Highbury but I don't remember it being part of the auction that took place before the start of the redevelopment and didn't see it when I did a stadium tour last year.

One side was owned by the late Frank Burridge and was displayed at his erstwhile museum, and may still be with the family. The side that caused the controversy at auction more recently had a sojourn in the States from 1994 until its recent appearance. If Old Trafford had a genuine plate, it would rather have ended the controversy about this other plate. Does the NRM have any footballers?

The plate at Old Trafford is a replica. This was confirmed by the club when the issues with the American owned plate surfaced.
