It’s a shape not seen for over eighty years – L&B Baldwin 2-4-2T No. 762 Lyn takes shape inside Alan Keef Ltd. Both the dome cover (in the background) and smokebox door (on the front running plate) have yet to be fitted. JON PAIN

On November 22, the legendary Baldwin-designed 2-4-2T was resurrected inside Alan Keef’s locomotive works in Ross-on-Wye, as the 762 Club, the group constructing the replica Lyn, trial assembled a number of major components.

The locomotive’s boiler, chimney, side tanks, cab, footplate and bunker were fitted to the rolling chassis, which was unveiled on September 17, meaning that Lyn looks like a complete locomotive for the first time.

This marks the latest milestone in the construction of the 1ft11½in gauge locomotive, which is on target for its public unveiling at the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway at Woody Bay on May 12 next year.

You can read the full story on Lyn's progress in the latest edition of Steam Railway, on sale December 2.
