They seem to be making very good progress - there's a few more progress pics on Roger Dimmick's fotopic site: http://roger-dimmick.fotopic.net/p59272390.html

...and more to come in the next day or so.

'Lyd' was towed up to Garnedd Tunnel last week, for clearance tests prior to fabricating the new cab... although, as no-one told me about this, I don't have any photos of that!

The picture caption says with the "original" cab profile, wasnt the intention always to modify the cab to make it fit?

The original idea is for the cab to have detachable sections so it could fit the FR comfortably. However the FR CME seems pretty confident that it will fit anyway when its finished.

Slight change of topic but seeing from the photos how little of the cab touches (admittedly only at the tunnel mounth) could there be an option to lower the rail height in the tunnel? On the WHR(C) there was one section that was lowered by clipping rail directly on to a base slab? Would that solve the Lyd problem and open up the FR to larger locos, or are there other tight points?

There was, in the 60s, prior to that section of line reopening, such an option, and it happened. The ground level in Garnedd tunnel was lowered around a foot, in order to provide clearance for the larger loading gauge that the revived FR adopted. The problem with lowering it any further is that Garnedd is built through a rather faulted outcrop of mother wales that is holding quite a substantial part of the mountain above up. Notwithstanding the time that the FR above Tan y Bwlch would have to be closed for the work to be undertaken, the chances of such work affecting the stability of the mountain would be rather high. There is an alternative option though - prior to Garnedd tunnel being built, the line went around the outcrop on a still extant ledge. However there would be significant outcry if the line were to be adapted, just to provide clearance for one locomotive - there are other places on the railway that give almost as limited a clearance, and the restricted loading gauge is as much part of the FR heritage story as anything else.

Is that the ledge on the right? If so, I presume none of the FR footplate crews suffered from vertigo.

That is the ledge, and to be honest, the drop from it is no worse than at many other places on the line. The problem occurs as the curvature of the ledge is rather sharp, both onto it at either end and at the apex, and would take some rather explosive trimming to clear the modern loading gauge with reasonable curves, leading to much the same problem with faulted rock as deepening the tunnel. I don't believe that locos ever worked that route, it was closed in 1851, and the first locos arrived in 1863.

Why has no one questioned whether or not the cab shape being a slightly different radius will actually effect the loco's appearence?

    *Insert obvious answer here*

    Therefore it clearly doesn't matter!

I read earlier it is hoped for a cab to be erected September/October time, but you never know what might fail on the FR!
