The stuff I was reading in the various local news sites related to this seemed to hint it was mostly LSL's doing alongside Hornby because the old Margate facility was now basically useless, but still home to the Hornby Experience and otherwise sitting empty.

Either way it's nice to get a new rail museum like this opening, regardless of who ultimately owns it, and it makes an excellent place to store out of turn locomotives for people to come and gawk at.

Has it actually been announced anywhere by LSL that Margate will be a museum and will be open to the public? The statements I have seen only talk about storage. I think a lot of people (including the local MP) are putting 2+2 together and getting 35!

Quoted from Icon's of Steam Facebook page 'Further to Locomotive Storage Limited’s purchase of the former Hornby site at Westwood, Margate in late February 2017, we are now thrilled to announce that that our A4 Class Pacific locomotive, 4464 Bittern, will arrive in Thanet on 2nd June 2018 for storage and eventual public display whilst it awaits its turn in the overhaul queue at our Crewe Depot... We will bring you more news in the coming weeks of when the site will be open to the public and we hope that you will enjoy the chance to get up close to the locomotive, along with our other exhibits, whilst it awaits its overhaul.'

Thanks. I remember seeing that quote now. I would caution however that a lot of people seem to be assuming that the site is going to be open very soon. I would draw attention to the word 'eventually' in the LSL quote.

I can't recommend anything in Margate but, if you do end up in that neck of the woods make time to visit the Ramsgate tunnels. That is a fascinating look back in history with a strong railway connection..

Won't be the biggest when the State in Grays opens...

...and it wouldn't be the first time Roger Gale had added 2+2 and got rather more than 4.

I think it will be a while before Gordon is back with us but they've had RSG for some time now, they must be working on it (I hope). IIRC Martin and his men got sidelined some while ago, their involvement ceased.:(

Whilst that is sad to hear, if true, past experience suggests that these things are often difficult and sometimes it is better to make a clean break and leave things to the new owners. The whisper I hear says that RSG is indeed being worked on...

I know they aren't easy to find but I do wish that the headcode blinds had been reinstalled. Minor quibble I know, but ships and ha'porths of tar come to mind.

As the pool of engineers that can maintain, work, and repair these is diminishing, you would have thought Martin & Co's experience would have been invaluable.

Wasn't this the 47 previously owned and restored by HNRC then swapped recently with an LSL 37? If so, LSL might have simply inherited the finish and stuck with for the time being perhaps?

Not going to disagree with that - but my experience is that once an asset has changed ownership, it is rarely a smooth ride for the previous owners/maintainers to remain involved with it unless there is a very close alignment with the new owners intentions...

Crewe Diesel Depot open day for charity as announced on FB: https://www.facebook.com/locomotiveservices/posts/2334756880143810

"We are pleased to announce that we will be holding an Open Day of our Crewe Diesel Depot on the 8th June 2019.

The event is being organised by Virgin Trains staff based at Crewe station to support colleagues suffering from Neuroendocrine Tumours and the Rethink charity which provided help and support for people affected by mental illness.

Partnering the event will be The Railway Magazine.

Under the banner of ‘All Change’ representing changes at the depot as well as to the railway network generally, the event will open at 09.30 until 16.00 and because of the limited size of the depot, admittance will be by advance ticket only with a limit of 5,000 tickets.

An auction of some Virgin Trains nameplates is under consideration with proceeds being added to the charity pot.

A night photoshoot is also likely for the evening before the main event, and there will be a number of trade stands in one of the maintenance sheds.

Tickets for the open day will be on sale online or by phone from February 6, and details and prices will appear only on The RM website towards the end of January and in the February issue of the magazine."
