Hello, just out of interest I am trying to find out how many surviving steam engines were either based at or visited Lowestoft during the BR steam days

I'm guessing the NNR B12 & J15, Britannia and Oliver Cromwell, but are there any others?

Three locos that are now preserved were shedded at Lowestoft in the 1950s.
J15 0-6-0 65462 1950 to 6.1960. Presently under overhaul and based at the NNR
    J17 0-6-0 65567 10.1958 to 9.1960. This is in the National Collection.
    N7 0-6-2 tank 69621 3. 1957 to 9. 1959. This is out and about.
It is also possible that Ivatt 4 2-6-0 43106 could have visited when she was allocated to South Lynn on the ex M.G.&N. during the first half of the 1950s.

I think I remember reading somewhere that at least one of the Bullied light pacifics loaned to Stratford for GER main line duties has survived, I don't know if they made it to Lowestoft and I can't find the information on which ones were involved in the loan

34059 Sir Archibald Sinclair went to Stratfordfor a couple of weeks in the spring of 1949 for trials.

It was followed in 1951 by 34057, 34065 and 34039 in May 1951 and 34076 and 34089 in November 1951. They returned to the Southern Region variously between December 1951 and May 1952.

Apart from various East Anglian destinations, apparently 34059 once made it as far as Doncaster!

I knew someone would know. So two are extant Boscastle as well as Sir Archibald Sinclair. Mind that doesn't let us know if they wandered down the East Suffolk Line to Lowestoft

The following isn't definitive, but comes from DL Bradley:

    34059 on test, 1949:

    28/4 and 29/4 - to Witham
2/5 to 6/5 - Norwich via Ipswich, Yarmouth South Town, Parkeston Quey
9/5 to 13/5 - Norwich via Ely, Norwich via Ipswich, ECS work to Liverpool Street, Clacton
16/5 to 20/5 - Clacton, Norwich via Ipswich and return via Ely, Parkestone Quay, Cambridge

All services were specials starting from Stratford except 18/5 and 20/5, which presumably by elimination were normal service trains - including taking "The Norfolkman".

    34039 / 34057 / 34065, from May 1951

At first used on Liverpool St to Cambridge trains, then latterly on "The Norfolkman" and the Parkeston Quay continentals.

When 34057 and 34065 arrived, they were mostly used on the "Day Continental" and "Scandanavian", as well as other boat trains. (Presumably that means to Parkeston Quay - sorry, my knowledge of East Anglain railway geography is scant!)

34039 "roamed more widely" to quite Bradley, at one point making it to Doncaster. It also became the first pacific to ever reach Bury St Edmunds.

Not sure if that helps - looks like the closest they definitively got to would have been 34059 at Beccles on the way to Yarmouth, if my geography is right.

No maps were harmed in the production of this article, though this one was quite useful: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rtw501/6198484563/ (not my image).

Thanks for all the info so far, also... What about the ex-Beamish J21, and the NRM E4 at Bressingham?

    Thanks Tom

Yup. Beccles looks like the closest, at least in terms of route miles, with Aldeby or St Olaves on the South Town line being the nearest as the crow flies. I assume the Norfolkman was only as far as Norwich, presumably when it had to reverse after stopping at Norwich something less glamorous was attached, but if another top flight loco was attached then Sheringham is perhaps indicated for these too.

    Cheers

Info from www.brdatabase.info implies that, at least from 1948, the E4 was based in Bury St Eds, Hitchin and Cambridge. J69 (thought I'd add that in) Stratford and Parkestone Quay and the J21 was allocated to the NE. However in 1935-37 8 J21s were allocated to Norwich, no idea which ones but I bet someone here does and pre 1948 allocations for the E4 and J69
