We've already got two returnees (well, as far as England if not yet Wales...) in the form of Elidir and Edward Sholto, both reportedly well on the way back to working order. The intention with the latter at least is to stick as closely as possible to original condition, though a lot of work has been needed on the kn*ckered bits (plus regauging from 1'10.75" to 60cm). Same approach applies to Hugh Napier, though of course that loco (apart from the boiler) hasn't left Gwynedd since it was first delivered in 1904.

Equally there's a case for saying that there's value in having UK locos like these abroad, provided they're somewhere where they help to tell a story (but please, not sectioned like poor Gertrude) and/or give people pleasure. The notion that all UK locos must be in the UK (as must lots of foreign-built ones with no UK associations, when we're talking narrow gauge) seems a bit imperialistic these days. But on the other hand it would be nice though...

There was a picture of Marchlyn in the USA on the Penrhyn site, but I can't find it now. IIRC the loco looked unloved but original (i.e. not Americanised!). There are Penrhyn people on here who may be able to dig the picture out.

I have just received a private message from Gareth Parry/PRHT Ltd thanking me for my credit for use of the Marchlyn in the USA image. I assume this thanks is meant to be sarcastic as I had not creditted anybody, and I genuinely didn't know who to credit, so I have removed the image from my original post.

I hope that pleases everyone and send my apologies to all concerned.

The photo had allready been credited to the photographer, and surely as you did not dowload and re-upload it there should be no troubles. Also this forum is limited to members only.

If you link to an image on another website in such a way that it actually appears here, then what you are doing is called 'Inline linking'. Inline linking to an image stored on another site increases the bandwidth use of that site even though the site is not being viewed; in other words everybody looking at that image costs the owner of the other website money.

Much better to just provide a link to the page on which the image appears.

According to the UK Loco Database-

    A Barclay 1991 /1931 0-4-0WT 1ft 111/2in 'Cegin'
Ex Penrhyn Quarry, N.Wales. To R. Johnson, Chickamauga, reported as exported again, to Argentina, no date given, rusting away in Hacienda La Esperanza 7/10.

Can anyone shed any light on this??

    Hi guys,

I have seen a photo that shows both of them together.

I believe they are indeed Cegin and Nesta, still together after all this time! Although no true identity has been determined yet.

The guy who runs the website gave me a contact in Puerto Rico, who did respond after a while.

The loco's are owned by the conservation trust of Puerto Rico. Apparently they have an agreement with a municipality museum to restore one, but I haven't seen any photo's showing that.

Cegin appears to have the chimney in the cab and appears otherwise complete. Work looks to have started on Nesta in terms of dismantling from th photo's.

I am not sure of the age of the photo's, but they don't look too badly rusted.

If I find out anymore I will let you know!

    Rich

That'd probably be "Gwen" the ex-John Knowles 18inch gauge Hunslet which worked in Derbyshire.

I'm amazed there was no response to this, so was prompted to sign up. The only British loco at the 1999 Sacramento Rail Fair was the 18" gauge 0-4-0WT GWEN (Hunslet 1404/1920) owned and restored to working order by Richard Farmer of Los Angeles.
I was one of the crew who ran this loco up and down 30ft of track for 10 days in temperatures up to 100 degrees, showed the Americans how to make tea from the injector and entertained the Union Pacific crew, who could fit GWEN into their loco's cab!
