She looked fantastic yesterday. I'm really looking forward to the end of the week when the smoke deflectors and chimney are put back on. Roll on the weekend!

They seem to have done a remarkably quick job of it. Top work.

Excuse my ignorance, is the boiler actually finished and ready to steam?

Trial fitting, it says on the website. But it still seems to have come together extremely quickly since the parts were delivered what, four months ago?

I don't believe it is finished yet - there's still the firebox to stay and the boiler tubes, superheaters etc to fit. Still a way off completion, but good to see that it fits!

    Great progress :)

First standard gauge boiler built in the UK since 1962?

Various Terrier boilers built by Israel Newton, though they're small enough to fit in your pocket.

    Lovely to see this pictures!

I might be wrong but if I remember it right the advertisement from the project was (in several years) the first standard gauge boiler to be manufactured in the UK for a mainline steam locomotive .

Seems that they have dropped mainline now ?

The plan was always for this locomotive to run on the main line at some stage. To do so will cost more money (this might not be the case in your country, I don't know) but, as far as I understand, that is still the aim.

Possibly as it now isn't the first, as the Railmotor has been on the big railway.

With regards to the boiler, no it's not a completely finished boiler at this point in time. It's an empty shell. This is a trial fit to make sure that it fits, which it did very nicely! The boiler will come out again next week and they will continue with the progress, which is going along very well. That shows what can be achieved when people get stuck into a project. As HBSS wanted to do this the project saw the trial fitting as an opportunity to do something over the weekend of the 10/11th as the national memorial engine, linked into with our AGM and an opportunity for members to see the boiler for the first time.

With regards the first new boiler since 1962, well that's what we were informed (I think it may have been a V2 boiler) a few years ago, but as you say a few very small boilers have been completed since. So technically it isn't the first, although I think I'm right in saying its the first superheated boiler since 1962. But regardless of whether it's the first or the 10th it doesn't really matter as the important thing is that it's British made. Keeping the skills alive to keep steam working into the future. HBSS are doing well enough to look at taking on new staff which I believe will involve an apprentice set up. Again passing on the skills. Well done to that set up!

It will be very interesting to see who is appointed to finish building the loco.

    Also FR 20 . . . . .

Probably the first superheated boiler built for a main line locomotive in the UK as pointed out above - not that it all really matters as its only marketing speak.

Whatever it qualifies as, it is a magnificent achievement to get to this stage.
Well done making a dream into reality.
