Not much chance of sustained 75mph running round the Salop circuit, except the quick sprint back from Stafford to Crewe at the end.

True enough, but most LSL loaded test runs in recent years have been on that circuit, and the WCML is busier.

Looks like Blue Peter has failed it's test run as 5Z32 is now heading back to Crewe only having got as far as Warrington.

Yesterday was full of surprises, first the appearance of the 60532 test run to Preston and then the suggestion of 44871 coming north to haul the Dalesman this week, followed quickly by news it wasn't.

So this morning it was off to see the A2 the weather being just what you'd hope for, what could go wrong ?
Seen going north on the approach to Acton Bridge station with no hint of problems albeit a few minutes behind schedule. It must have gone back to Crewe fairly quickly after arriving at Warrington as I didn't see it while looking for the return shot.

Then I saw the post by @Will RL (thanks) that 44871 (5z43) was en route so I might as well stay out to see that. A new angle for me from near Stableford, just loco and coach and by now too warm for exhaust . Still it was a nice walk along a quiet lane to find this with plenty autumn flora and fauna.

Has anybody any info. as to why Blue Peter failed. Just curious, it must have been a sickener for all the people involved with BP

Had seen that, but not sure it's RIR. It says ECS, which the 5Z code tends to confirm. 27th is the last day of the two train Jacobite service, so it's likely to be the second set of coaches which are presumably needed quite urgently back at base. What's hauling it is open to debate, of course, but - strangely - the train is only going to Carlisle and I can't see any other moves there on the 28th that are not related to the Lune Rivers train or an ECS move from Carnforth to Aberdeen, or ECS moves around Carlisle. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/se...8/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt&toc=WR

If it is IRR, that would imply that the Lune Rivers will only be steam-worked from Carlisle, rather than Carnforth.

EDIT: I suppose the term ECS and 5Z codes can cover loco + coach movements, and the absence of any other WCRC moves from Carlisle over the following days suggests nothing will be left behind on Saturday. So it does look like this is RIR, and that the Lune Rivers will only be steam worked from Carlisle.

Ian Riley posted on a Facebook group (can't remember which one, sorry!) that 45212 will be on the Lune Rivers trip on Saturday, presumably from Carlisle only.

It looks like Tangmere traveled home in steam with the rods still on, but without the cylinder cover. Hopefully not too much damage done.

Had confirmation from West Coast, via email, that the tour will be hauled by 2x Class 33 from Carnforth to Carlisle, then steam hauled around the coast.

the $10000 question will be if the cover which is designed iirc to be sacrificial has been removed by the Piston head without damaging the block . 7802 took a chunk of block with it which rendered the block scrap

on 34067 she still has the combined piston rod and cross head (unlike 34007 which has the version which the rebuilts got and 28 originals did with a separate crosshead and piston rod held together with a cotter) . The fracture appears to be at the crosshead end on 34067

From @wcmlbls1846 website, a cropped and lightened photo of the cylinder at Carnforth the other day.

    Screenshot_20240922-212646~3.png

That to me looks like a fairly substantial chunk of the cylinder is missing. I can't see any studs or holes for a start.
