For the first time in 30 years, former Fairbourne Railway locomotives will be reunited – at the Kirklees Light Railway’s 11th Annual Steam & Diesel Gala on September 10/11.

The weekend will feature Bassett-Lowke 4-4-2 Count Louis and Guest Engineering’s 2-4-2s Katie and Sian star at the Kirklees ‘Fairbourne in the Hills’ gala; all three were resident at the formerly 15in-gauge railway before it was re-gauged to 12¼in in 1986.

Katie, which was bought by the KLR in April 2015, was built in 1954 for the Dudley Zoo Railway before becoming a member of the Fairbourne’s fleet between 1965 and 1985. The locomotive’s twin sister, Sian, was built for the Fairbourne Railway in 1963 and remained there until the line was re-gauged.

All three visiting steam locomotives attended the Fairbourne Railway’s Centenary of Steam Gala during the Spring Bank Holiday of this year, with the celebrations continuing at Kirklees.

There will be seven in steam at the KLR gala; the visiting locomotives will line up alongside the 15in-gauge line’s own fleet: 2-6-2T Fox, 0-6-4ST Badger, 0-4-4-0Ts Hawk and Owl.
