Two bent rods is intriguing. What common mode failure can cause that? Hydraulic damage has been suggested and is plausible but would be very unusual to happen to both engines.

It would clearly indicate some kind of failure, Possibly drain cocks not opening or mechanical failure, do they work on Popular differently than say any other terrier? it would only take one revolution to damage both rods, so i would say Mechanical failure, could something have come adrift and blocked the drain cock mechanism, and the crew were unable to open the drain cocks, normally the piston ends would be the thing that goes, but are the connecting rods a weaker point on slide valve engines ?

It is very difficult to hydraulic a slide valve engine. You generally don’t need cylinder drain cocks on them as, if there is any water in the cylinder, it pushes the valve off its seat and it is exhausted either into the steam chest or up the chimney, usually the latter. I know of quite a few slide valve locos with no cylinder drain cocks, only a steam chest cock. That’s not to say it didn’t happen in this case, though.

I may be mistaken, but those rods appear to be part of the valve gear, not the connecting rods - either that or terriers have very large big ends...

PL is usually written on a "damage" basis, ie it covers physical damage to third parties (and varying levels of consequential cover). Breach of a confidentiality agreement would not be covered. Or worse, it's the PL insurance that is covering this, and it's their confidentiality agreement, so breaching it you could void cover.

I saw some twisted rods like that the other year at Newbridge on the NYMR.

However they had been driven over a cliff.

    Mission Impossible.
I think Keiran C+W bought them as a souvenir.

The auction did not result in a sale. The loco remains in the ownership of the deceased owner’s estate. They must decide what to do next.

Marcia left on a low loader yesterday, bound for an auction house, apparently....

Thanks for the update. A sad day for the railway, but it'd be good if Marcia ended up somewhere she might see a bit more use.

Berrybrook steam near Exeter have announced on Facebook today that Marcia is with them. They mainly deal with road steam and classic cars.

    An intermediary, not a destination.
Interesting trackwork underneath, made of box section steel. If it shows wear, give it a quarter turn !
