    Welded or riveted?

The website doesn't say, but it has a picture of the approved design plans.

Difficult to read the detail but I can't see anything obvious about welding on the boiler barrel so I suspect the latter. Open to correction though.

Warwickshire's new boiler is mostly of traditional riveted, construction, but not entirely. The boiler barrel is welded, and the inner firebox will be flanged and welded.
Don't get too excited about developments yet - we ordered the barrel whilst we were ordering a batch of barrels for various projects (it gets the costs down), I'm afraid we've a few other jobs to get out of our queue before much major will happen with Warwickshire.

Does anyone know the whereabouts or current status of Hudswell Clarke 1631?

The last source I can find is that in 2020 it was based at Tyseley and up for sale.

I believe it was confirmed as still at Tyseley in Feb 2022. Not seen any mention of it since, so I assume still there.

I am temporarily out of action after having my second new hip fitted, which will increase my mobility, but it is most frustrating when so much is happening and the locomotive is getting so near to completion.

On my last visit before the operation there was a concern that we were running out of 5/8 Whitworth stock for mounting cab fittings, this sort of stuff is difficult to get and I went off to search the stores van, without a great deal of hope. Just as I was leaving the 8F mess coach I came across a volunteer in the act of emptying a bucket of nuts and bolts into the scrap skip. Someone was having a clear out, including a significant quantity of 5/8 Whitworth, and I collared the lot. These turned put to be items originating from a main line project somewhere else, but which did not have the proper paperwork for that, and they did not fit whatever other project they had been scrounged for. The problem was solved in five minutes flat; I felt it was a good omen.

Nothing succeeds like success and it is heartening to see the way that everyone is coming together to get this project over the line. The cab fittings are now being mounted in place, the ejector and water feed pipes have been annealed and fitted, and a new blower ring. The next job will be to make and shape the pipework to link everything together. The locomotive is now painted and varnished and carrying the nameplates for the first time in around 20 years. The next major milestone will be the final hydraulic test with the fittings in place and the safety valves blanked off, which will restart the boiler certificate, followed by the final steam test and fitting of the firebrick cement arch.

We have had a lot of help from Simon Scott, the new EVR general manager who is determined to have The Duke in steam at the New Year Steam Gala, if not necesarily pulling passengers.

I see on facebook a photo from Riley's showing a largely complete Avonside, I am assuming 1973 Dora. Does anyone know if its still belongs to the long time owner?

It is Dora. Been there for a couple of years being overhauled.

I got a gold star from the physiotherapist on Friday and permission to experiment with motoring; the crucial test is whether you can make an emergency stop, and this time it was the left hip, so I took a trial trip to Wirksworth. This was succesful, but tiring, which is what you can expect at this stage. After admiring the new ashpit I had a chat with the gang and saw the progress; the cab fittings are mostly in place and the pipework is making steady progress. The missing bits at the moment are the gauge glass protectors, gauge glass drain cocks and the drip valves for the vacuum system. These are on order, but delivery is slow and if anyone has such items on the shelf and surplus then I would be pleased to hear from them.

This is actually Peckett 1530 (not 1430, which is at Oswestry).

Can anyone tell me the current location and status of the Bagnall 0-4-0ST which carried the name ‘Matthew Murray’ at Middleton before that name was applied to MW1601?

    Do you mean Bagnall 2702?

I have a note that "Boiler at NYMR but frames elsewhere (July 2023)." Would be happy to receive confirmation/correction as appropriate.

That’s the current situation. The frames are at a private location which the owner doesn’t want to disclose.

As an update to this, I'm informed tha the frames are now finished, as are the tank and cab bunkers and work is currently progressing on the boiler. I'm looking forward to the day it steams again as, being the first loco I ever drove back in 1965, I've a fond affection for it.

    Bagnall 2746 The Duke.

The testing programme continues. The boiler had a warming fire in it in preparation for a hydraulic test on Thursday 14th December, which it passed with flying colours, so the blanks were removed, fittings replaced and the fire re-lit. The first move under steam since 2000, just a short trip in the yard area but it goes like a sewing machine, with a very even beat. The final formal inspection will be next week, to be followed by a proving run light engine. There is still a list of jobs to complete before the locomotive can enter traffic, mostly on the brake systems, but it should be shunting about at the New Year event. Happy Christmas.

The testing programme has been completed; the locomotive passed the final inspections and on 20th December made a successful trial trip to Shottle; it is now expected to be operating trains at the Winter Steam Gala on 31st December/ 1st January. The operating crews report that this is the smoothest running Austerity they have come across, for which I have to thank the 8F team who went to all lengths to audit and overhaul the mechanical condition of the locomotive.
There is still work to do, the cement arch needs fitting in the firebox for example, the aim is to complete the outstanding items in time for the February Half term services. IMG_1766[1].JPG

Does anyone know if the Future of Hudswell Clarke 1366 (Renishaw Ironworks No.6) is any clearer? It was, I understand, the subject of a negotiation between Tanfield and the Aln Valley Railway, but now appears to be up for sale.
