We are a lot more savvy about our rights, rights that were available to us years ago, but we were unaware of.

How much pain did we endure, awaiting missed timetabled connections, on cold wet stations due to delays?

For me, in 1976, left a Queen concert at Southampton early to catch the last train back to Weymouth.

It terminated at Bournemouth with the promise of a following service to take us on home.

I was 16 and so was my girlfriend, whose parents had begrudgingly entrusted me with her safety.

A four-hour wait ensued for the milk/newspaper train.

We were thrown out of the waiting room, they locked the toilets and shut the door on their lobby, it was a fully manned station.

It was a cold damp early May night.

Today's press would have a field day.

We were entitled to a taxi but did not realise it and no one availed us of our rights.

    Any similar experiences?

Personally no, however, on my way back from London to Kidderminster with a friend of mine a couple of years back, our train was sufficiently late that we'd have missed our connection in Birmingham. My friend was a little concerned about how we would get home but I pointed out they would have to pay to get us back to Kidderminster, and promptly headed to the Virgin trains customer service desk and got them to arrange transport home for us.
