The spelling of the shop name, given it's railway links, is a tad amusing. Somebody clearly was being too fast!

the froth and energy expended over 6880 and whether it appears really does beggar belief and it must make those organising said events wonder why they bother . Four gala's where the intention was for it to appear and sadly it didn't and yet every one has gone down a storm without the engine . Battlefield had a great one, as did the ESR and the SVR and although never officially advertised for the WSR , that it wasn't there did not detract from a very enthusiastically received event . Hopefully 6880 will be the star but if it doesn't the world won't star turning and a fabulous show will be put on by all involved at the GWSR

I wasn't trying to generate any froth - just asking what seemed like a perfectly reasonable question. My point is not that the attendance of 6880 will make or break the gala, it was more a question about whether there was an alternative plan if 6880 is not available. I'm sure it will be a great event whatever happens - it always is.

I will take that as a cheap pot at me

so for the record yes I have a day advertised with 6880 . It is caveated that the back up is 2999 if for any reason the engine is unavailable so the invite is transparent on the current situation

Just for the record this will be the fourth charter to support railways , the previous three having to change or not run . What you don't see is the effort , the discussions that go into putting all this together , all done to try in a small way to support preserved railways and time that could have been spent with family or doing something else
what you also don't see is the five bollockings and counting that I've had so far , all unmerited for trying to support the movement and all done in close cooperation with the railways concerned based on the best information available. When one comes in from a chairman at 11pm at night it doesn't make for a good nights sleep

But as events have reminded me again this week I remain at times an outsider to be tolerated at best, discouraged at worst . Thirty years ago the same attitude curtailed a volunteering career . I had hoped things had changed for the better but apparently old habits remain

I feel for the railways who have acted in good faith , the Betton Grange group who are so close to the line , to all those at Tyseley finishing the engine and to whom the scrutiny is way above and beyond what should be endured .

And what's wrong with that? If it raises a few quid for the owning group, that has to be good surely?

Good luck with the charter. I hope it goes well. I would have joined you but I'm already booked on some D-Day 80 events.

Martin, another member on here asked a reasonable question if there was something to replace 6880 if it didn’t show up, and I have to say it really didn’t deserve the response you gave.
My response was slightly sarky I’ll agree but I have to say PR isn’t a strong point of yours regarding 6880.

Not sure why I am promoted to 6880 PR . I'm a customer like everyone else and whilst that can allow some extra insight it is not my place to share it . you may think i'm sat in the swanky departure lounge drinking champagne and knowing all, whilst everyone else is waiting for the gate announcement knowing the inbound flight hasn't yet arrived ! trust me , its been more like sat in security having a full bag search wondering if you are even going to get the flight .

Great to see 2807 out in time for the gala.
Fingers crossed 6880 can break the habit and perform sensationally at the event too!

Just picked up on this comment. My memory may be faulty ( it was more than sixty years ago !) but I think we may have seen them occasionally on the WR mainline heading to Newton Abbot for either Plymouth or Paignton/Dartmouth. Probably on holiday expresses or interchange workings. Can anybody check ?

I remember reading on more than one occasion, southern loco's worked a turn from Exeter to Plymouth and back in case the Southern route was closed (engineering etc?), to maintain route knowledge for the diversion. I saw two WC/BB during a two week holiday in Dawlish Warren in July 1963 on passenger, so guess that's what they were doing.
I guess MN's could have been used, but doubt it with the not West of Exeter on axle loading limit on the Southern alluded to in earlier posts. I checked various books I have but couldn't find any photos.
Perhaps someone more local may wish to correct anything I have got wrong?
