Your overlooking one thing though, 4073, and 6000 are not currently at York, so gifting either of these would have not created space, so either 2818, or 4003 it had to be, with 2818 transfered to Steam, that creates a space at Shilton, so another engine can be transfered from York to fill that space,or two smaller engines, to free up space for " other revenue earning purposes" . maybe the NRM could do what the Designer outlet in Swindon did, house an engine under cover in an shopping centre to free up further space ? Crewe, Doncaster, Manchester?

encased in by a wall i think :( this is one of the worse things about Steam, it could have been so much better in my opinion, that they can not change the layout to add further exibits if new loan engines arrive, something else has to leave to make room , and there is , or was 3 unused roads outside that could have been incorporated next to the site, that with a little imagination could have been made to look like a small regional shed , along with the traverser .

STEAM in Swindon is part of a shopping centre complex

its next door to the designer outlet centre, which is part of the old works, the food hall used to, have a steam loco on display there, but its not part of Steam, Steam is a few yards away when i lived in Swindon, i think it had City of Turo in the food hall, Steam was being built,

I WONDER, how many families go into the designer outlet, see the loco and adverts for steam, and decide to either go take a look, or leave the female members of the family to shop and the male members head over to Steam? i think that shopping centres could be one idea of where to display engines from the national collection where they can be under cover for instance if say the midland compound was placed on display in say Derby, would it make people think oh i must look at what else is in the area such as our heritage railways etc ,

I think Hinton Manor and Hagley Hall have been a good advert for the SVR

My bad - I thought it was part of the same complex. Nevertheless, my point still stands - it WAS Swindon, not Shildon...

This family certainly did that at Swindon. But only because the two were next door - any further at all, and it wouldn't have happened.

I would like to think that the NRM's motivation for thinning its collection at York is to make space for some imaginative interpretive displays. I'm not a big fan of cramming as many engines as possible into a building and calling it a Museum. Not only are most of the displays lifeless, you can't see anything properly because it's too cramped. The displays at Sacramento and Strasburg (PA) are far better, despite being housed in modern buildings, and having far fewer large exhibits. There are lots of little cameos that place the exhibits in a realistic setting. Some might call it Pastiche! ;) But it works.

Besides the headline items of the locos being moved out to various places.
Has any other stock been put on the disposal list?
    Coaches, wagons etc.
