My jinx with Scots Guardsman continues. It usually fails to appear, and the only time it did appear was with a diesel. I will give the circular a miss and go for a walk instead. I will be taking my walking boots with me anyway for the free day in Cornwall.

Not another rumour.....please. I know that there are always last minute tweaks to such trips but GBXIV is starting to get silly. The double head arrangement from Stirling has been billed for ages. Unless NR is playing games with WCRC, they will have been aware of the plan months ago so what has changed?

It doesn't help anyone to start these rumours especially when the RTC is saying nothing about these changes to those who are travelling.

It's what's called a blocking High in the trade and that means an almost guaranteed dry spell. So it's not likely to rain on GBXIV.

But this is not unusual spring weather and who wants a wet holiday? Quite different from the same in July with 28 degrees and full on sun that poses real issues.. But this is Scotland in 2022 and risk aversion is real.

Actually you’re wrong. Dry, dead grass and no new growth yet, means the line side is currently very dry.
By July the grass has grown and ironically the fire-risk in Scotland lessens, although there’s always the problem of extreme temperatures. The daily fire-risk assessment takes this into account as one of the many inputs.
The downside of starting The Jacobite at Easter is the attendant risk of fires.

I missed a long period of preserved workings for a good many years, so there are gaps in my 'education'. Am I right in thinking this will be the first time a Merchant Navy will run on the ECML north of Newcastle? I was fortunate enough to have seen 35026's visit to Newcastle on 22nd October 1966, but that train was a York-Newcastle return run for the MN after it took over from 4472 which handled the Kings X-York legs.

I think that's right as to being the first Merchant north of Newcastle. 35018 worked to Waverley the other week but that came in from the west, having come over Beattock. There has been a Light Pacific (though not on a public train). According to UK Main Line Steam 34027 worked the Harry Potter book launch train from York to Edinburgh on 10th July 2000. It worked back to Preston via Perth, Stirling and Carlisle on 11th July. Later in the year (7/10) whilst still in red, she ran Preston - Shap - Beattock - Glasgow. A week later she ran south on a steam section starting at Workington, so presumably departure from Scotland was loco and coach.

Yep. We are saying the same thing in different ways. Scotland isn't Southern England in spring. Come the summer the issues can reverse north to south
