If you went for a 'Greater Britain' 2-2-2-2, you could authentically employ a wonderfully impractical ivory livery into the bargain. ;)

And wouldn't that be the right sort of size for some of our preserved railways?

What's size got to do with it? I just want to sit back and listen to the cleaners cursing the s*d who landed 'em with an ivory white loco to prepare! :D

More seriously, the lack of any Webb compound doesn't aid informed discussion about their effectiveness (or lack thereof). Ditto the Von Borries' 2-cyl compounds.

Mr Webb ordered a a 3 cylinder compound and a 2 cylinder simple 0-8-0 designed and built at same time in 1892.
Due to industrial unrest the compound engine No 50 was completed a year later than the simple 2524.
It was then arranged that two identical coal trains were pulled 96 miles side by side at identical speed.
The compound used ca 24% less water and coal.
On the NER Raven superwised a comparation of compound versus simple from a lot of different designs and found no advantage in normal train opperation .
In Germany von Borris and Lochner tested almost identical 4-4-0 simple and compound and found a compound advantage of 13 to 20% at high and steady speed.
The problem was surely the starting valves and this was first made harmless by mr Golsdorf some years later. It was then possible to use two cylinder compounds in Wienna surburban trains for thirty years.
Is there any rumours about first selling date of the much longed for Webb fourcylinder book by mr Peter Davis?

And I love LNWR engines! But Black 5s are sacred.
(Since we have one Super D, I'd rather have a Cauliflower, to be honest).

I wouldn't say sacred, more well respected.
Although, what would you say to another Midland Compound?
